Episode 38: Reccoa's Shadow

Summary

The Melord is in pursuit of the Audhumla over the ocean. Jerid believes that since he is no longer in Dakar he can do as he pleases. On the Audhumla, Kamille loads the Zeta Gundam and Hyaku-Shiki onto a shuttle. Char and Hayato watch and talk about Beltorchika. Kamille asks Char if the Argama will pick them up when they reach space, and Char answers they probably won't be able to. Amuro and Beltorchika come to say goodbye, and Amuro tells them the Titans are very close now. Char tells Amuro that he seems more like himself now, and Amuro answers that is due to Char's influence. A battle alert is sounded, and Amuro runs off to the Dijeh while Beltorchika gets into a gun turret. Kamille asks Char if they should fight, and Char says their mission now is to get back into space. Jerid launches in the Byarlant and is joined by a squad of Barzams, while Amuro attacks with his Dijeh and a squad of Nemos. Kamille asks Hayato if he has a message for Katz, and Hayato asks him to stay alive. Jerid orders the Melord to ram into the Audhumla, but they fire missiles instead. As the Audhumla ascends to launch the shuttle, Amuro decides to take out the Melord. He destroys its primary bridge, forcing it descend quickly and cease the attack. Amuro attacks Jerid and disables the Byarlant as the shuttle launches. As the shuttle heads into space, Char tells Kamille about how people became Newtypes. Kamille wants to be back in space so that Four can stay in his heart. They spot a battle nearby, which is actually Yazan's Hambrabi team attacking the Argama. Apolly leads the mobile suits in the attack, and Fa tells Shinta and Qum to stay in their rooms. Kamille prepares the Zeta Gundam and Hyaku-Shiki for battle, and Char sets the shuttle on course for the Argama at full speed. He hopes they can make it in time.

Char estimates it will take 15 minutes to reach the Argama, so Kamille continues preparing their mobile suits for battle. On the Argama, Fa asks Bright if she can use the Methuss, but he says that he doesn't want it damaged in battle. Astonaige calls Bright and tells him that Shinta and Qum are inside the Methuss and are trying to pilot it. Bright orders Fa to go down to the mobile suit deck and yell at them. Shinta and Qum think that if they can pilot the Methuss they can protect the ship while Kamille is gone. Fa gets inside and bonks them both on the head. On the Alexandria, Gady asks Reccoa how she feels about seeing her old ship under attack. Though she thinks she has betrayed the AEUG, Gady thinks she is a spy. Yazan returns to battle, and his Hambrabis use their sea serpents to grapple onto a Rick Dias and destroy it. They grapple onto Apolly's suit to do the same, but Fa arrives in the nick of time and cuts him free with her beam saber. Char and Kamille launch in their suits, and Kamille has the Hyaku-Shiki ride on the Zeta Gundam so they can reach the battle faster. One of the Hambrabis grabs onto the Methuss, and Fa ejects before it explodes. Kamille and Char join the battle, and Char asks Bright to send him the Mega Bazooka Launcher. Torres says it might be destroyed in transit, but Bright overrules him. Char retrieves his weapon and targets the Alexandria. Kamille finds Fa's pod and grabs onto it. He senses Reccoa's presence on the Alexandria, and Reccoa senses Char preparing to fire. She tells Gady to retreat, and he reluctantly agrees. Char fires and misses, and he wonders how such a thing is possible. Gady orders a retreat and the battle ends. Hambrabi pilot Ramsus Hasa asks Reccoa if she betrayed the AEUG because of Scirocco, and she says she wants to charm him. On the Argama, Bright thanks Kamille for his work and tells Char that his Dakar speech has given Spacenoids hope for the future. Later, Kamille takes a shower and wonders why he felt Reccoa when he is sure that she is dead.

Commentary

Kamille's second trip to Earth is wrapped up in an episode that is packed with action and lots of guests. From the looks of it, I'm pretty sure this is the last time we will see Amuro, Hayato and Beltorchika in the series. Hayato returns in Gundam ZZ, but we won't see Amuro again until Char's Counterattack. Jerid proves here yet again that even with a brand new advanced mobile suit he is no match for any AEUG or Karaba pilots, be they Kamille or Amuro. Fa displays some more bad piloting skills here, and Shinta and Qum get on my nerves. I know Tomino likes to have children aboard battleships in all his UC series, but I could definitely do without Shinta and Qum. I think they're even more annoying than the brat pack from the White Base. Also, we get to see Reccoa's return after four episodes, and she has apparently betrayed the AEUG and joined the Titans. I figured that would be the case based on her feelings from before and her lingering desire to see Scirocco. She doesn't seem to be a Newtype, but she occasionally does Newtype-ish things like sensing Scirocco's connection to the Hambrabis and here sensing Char trying to destroy the Alexandria. Why she does this is anyone's guess.
