Episode 4: Emma's Decision

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Kamille is outraged by the death of his mother. He spots Jerid nearby and attacks his Hizack in a mad frenzy. Jerid recognizes Kamille's voice and fights back harder so he won't be disgraced by a kid. Emma and Char head out to stop Kamille, and she asks Jerid not to fight because Kamille is a kid. Lila's Galbaldy Beta squad returns and resumes the attack. Emma identifies herself as a Titan and tells Lila to back off. Blex thinks that Kamille has gone mad, and Char says they have no choice but to hand the Mk IIs to Bask. Jerid escapes while Emma and Char restrain Kamille. They try to open his cockpit, but he refuses to come out. Emma flies back to the Alexandria with the Gundams in tow. In the hangar, they are forced to open the hatch to pull Kamille out. Emma asks him if his mother was inside and slaps him when he doesn't respond. When they pull him out, he finds Franklin waiting for him. Kamille tells him that mother is dead, and Franklin doesn't seem too shocked. Kamille gets angry and says to his father it'll be more convenient now for him and his lover, which earns him a slap. As they take Kamille to the brig, he encounters Jerid. Jerid says he didn't know Kamille's mother was in the capsule. Kamille says he forgives Jerid because it is a soldier's duty to follow orders. He says he ended up this way because of a military organization and now hates that organization. Jerid tries to attack him, but Emma tells him to settle down.

Bask gives Emma a new mission: he wants her to acquire the new AEUG mobile suits from the Argama. He gives her permission to use the Mk II's and work with Lila's unit. Jerid asks to go so he can vindicate his honor, and Bask tells him only someone who has actually achieved something can say that. On the Argama, Char predicts that Emma will return to them, because he doesn't believe she's cut out to be a Titan. Emma breaks Kamille and his father out of the brig and takes them through the ship. She asks Franklin if he can pilot the Mk II, and he tells her he designed it. Kamille attacks Kacricon and another officer to steal normal suits for Franklin and himself. After reaching the hangar, they each take a Mk II, and Jerid is suspicious when Kacricon doesn't answer. Emma threatens to blast the hangar door open, and the operator opens it for her. As they escape, the Alexandria fires its cannons and damages Franklin's Mk II. Lila's Galbaldy Beta unit attacks them, and Char launches in the Rick Dias to provide cover. Char and Emma fend off the attack and escort the Mk IIs to the Argama. Char tells Emma he doesn't believe her defection because Titans are chosen from a select stock of people. He asks her what changed inside of her, and she says she was doing only what she thought was right. Kamille says she is a nice person and is trustworthy. As Kamille thinks about what happened, he is angry that his father is preoccupied with Char's Rick Dias.

Commentary

Things seem to be getting more complicated. Emma has apparently abandoned the Titans, but Bask did give her orders to get the AEUG mobile suits. Perhaps it's part of a plan, and perhaps not. I would tend to think not because she seems way too nice to be a Titan. Kamille and Jerid clash more in this episode, and a bitter rivalry is forming between them like the Amuro/Char conflict. Jerid's pride is very important to him, and he has it wounded twice in this episode by Bask and Kamille. Even though Bask is a bastard, he is right about Jerid not having accomplished anything at all. That might bother him more than getting beaten in battle by Kamille.
