Episode 47: A Descent into the Maelstrom

Review by Chris Guanche

November 3, 2002

Summary

Kamille sees Shinta and Qum playing with Haro, and Shinta asks him to come back safely. As Kamille is about to launch in the Zeta Gundam, Katz complains about not being part of the attack. Kamille takes the hyper mega launcher with him, and Katz launches in the G-Defenser against orders. Fa launches in the Methuss to chase Katz, and Bright decides he will discipline them later. Char asks if he should go after them, but Bright says no. He calls the rest of the AEUG fleet and commences Operation Maelstrom to capture Gryps 2 from Haman. Katz catches up with Kamille, and Kamille tells Katz he'll be ruined if he brings his personal feelings into the battle. Katz says he wants revenge on Haman and blames her for Sarah's death. Kamille tells Katz to leave and join Operation Maelstrom, but Katz refuses. Kamille transforms and threatens to shoot Katz if he doesn't leave. Fa gets in the way and asks Kamille if he can control himself as well as he controls Katz. As the Argama enters the Gryps area, Char launches in the Hyaku-Shiki, followed by Emma in the Mk II and a squad of Rick Dias suits. The Argama begins firing its cannons at the Axis fleet, and Haman watches the battle from the Gwanban. She sees that the AEUG took advantage of holes in their formation, but she is confident that they will beat the AEUG. She feels a strange pressure, and Kamille hides behind an asteroid near the Gwanban. Char destroys Gryps 2's breakers and fights off several Gaza-Cs. Kamille waits for Haman, and Haman decides to join the battle in the Qubeley. As she heads down a hall she encounters Mineva. Mineva doesn't want her to leave and says she feels as uncomfortable as when she met Char. Haman vows she will destroy the Argama and the AEUG. As she is about to launch in the Qubeley, she feels the pressure from Kamille again.

Haman launches in the Qubeley and is attacked from behind by Katz. He flies circles around her as she tries to shoot at him. Kamille emerges from behind the asteroid and fires the hyper mega launcher, but he misses. He then pulls out his beam saber and follows up with a shot from his beam rifle. He tells Haman that he can't allow her to live because she is the cause of battles. Haman deploys funnels against Kamille, and he is able to dodge them. He grabs the hyper mega launcher and uses it as a beam saber. Haman taunts Kamille and tells him he has reached the limits of his skills. As they fight, they have Newtype reactions and see each other across space. Kamille looks at Haman and sees images of all the women in his life, along with Char and Scirocco. As he looks at Haman closer he sees a memory of himself as a boy with his mother. Haman looks at Kamille and has a memory from when she was involved with Char. Kamille says they can understand each other, and Haman wonders if it is true. Haman regains her senses and is angry at Kamille for having seen her private thoughts. She tells him he is the same as Char and attacks him. Kamille remembers that he must kill her and pulls out his beam saber. As Haman is about to strike, Katz shoots the beam saber out of her hand. She then slices into the G-Defenser's wing and sends it flying out of control. She shoots at Kamille, but Fa jumps in front and has the Methuss' leg blown off. Kamille becomes angry and grapples onto the Qubeley. He slices off one of the Qubeley's shoulders, and Haman escapes. Kamille then joins Emma in fighting off the Gazas near Gryps. After the AEUG captures Gryps 2, Kamille tells Char that he wasn't able to beat Haman because his weak heart was subdued by her strong will. Char tells Kamille that he is as dangerous as Amuro and might repeat his mistakes. He notes that it took Amuro seven years to free his mind from the hell he was in.

Commentary

As the war begins to wind down, Gryps is becoming a major part of the final battle. Now that the AEUG has control of it they have a fighting chance against Axis and the Titans. It looks like the short-lived alliance between AEUG and Axis is gone. Katz again recklessly goes into battle and almost gets himself killed. He blames Haman for Sarah's death, despite the fact that it was he who killed her. If anything, he should blame Scirocco since Sarah was so obsessed with him. Kamille has an intense battle with Haman, as well as a strange encounter. What they experienced is very much like what happened to Amuro and Lalah, but those two managed to understand each other. It almost happened here too, but Haman closed herself off after Kamille saw something she didn't want him to see. Perhaps her unresolved feelings for Char are part of the reason she entered the war. We'll have to see the rest to know for sure.
