Episode 49: Casualties of War

Review by Chris Guanche

November 3, 2002

Summary

Axis and the Titans attack the AEUG fleet, pressing the Radish in a corner. On the Argama, Char launches in the Hyaku-Shiki and asks Bright to send out the Mega Bazooka Launcher. As Katz launches in the G-Defenser, he wishes that Axis and the Titans would crash into each other. Kamille says that because of talk like that people call him childish, and Emma tells Katz to shut up. As soon as Kamille launches, Jerid approaches with his Baund-Doc and attacks the Zeta Gundam. Elsewhere, Yazan and his Hambrabi team attack Emma and Katz. Katz tries to dock with Emma to form the Super Gundam, but Yazan won't let him. Kamille feels the battle that Emma and Katz are in and runs away from Jerid. Katz maneuvers and fires the G-Defenser's thrusters at the Hambrabi's monoeye to blind Yazan. He is able to dock with Emma to form the Super Gundam. Emma uses the Super Gundam's long beam rifle to blow away Ramsus. She tells Katz to escape with his Core Fighter, but he insists on fighting. He attacks Yazan, and Yazan is amazed that such a small mouse would attack him. As Katz flies around, he doesn't pay attention to where he is going and hits an asteroid. As the Core Fighter flies out of control with him knocked out, Yazan shoots at him several times. The image of Sarah appears and tells Katz she is glad that she met him. As Katz wakes up, the Core Fighter slams into another asteroid and explodes. Emma, Kamille, Char, Fa and Bright feel Katz's death. In anger, Emma blows away the other Hambrabi and then goes after Yazan. He hits her from behind and blows away the Super Gundam components. Henken sees that Emma is in trouble and uses the Radish as a shield to defend her. Yazan blows off the Mk II's arm and then blows up the Radish's bridge. Jerid grabs Kamille, and Kamille says that because of him battles are being fought. Jerid says that it is Kamille's fault that he is fighting and that he hasn't killed as many people as Kamille. Kamille says he isn't a murderer and shoots Jerid. The Baund-Doc crashes into the Radish and explodes along with the ship.

Kamille cries out and begins wildly firing his beam rifle. Scirocco feels the unease and asks Reccoa to join him in battle, so they launch in The-O and Palace-Athene. Kamille finds Emma and notices that she doesn't seem to respond to him. He opens his visor in space to get her attention and tells her to go back to the Argama. Fa takes her in, and Saegusa tells Bright that he has spotted the Gwanban. The Mega Bazooka Launcher is launched, and Char grabs hold of it. Emma asks Astonaige to put the Mk II onto Shackles so that she can keep fighting. Haman launches in the Qubeley with a large squad of Gaza-Cs and orders them to attack the Jupitris. Scirocco and Reccoa begin shooting at the Gazas, and Char blows the rest away with the Mega Bazooka Launcher. Haman deploys her funnels and destroys the Mega Bazooka Launcher. Char attacks Scirocco, and Kamille grabs the Palace-Athene. He tells Reccoa that Katz and Henken died, but Yazan interrupts by attacking him. Yazan grabs Kamille, and Reccoa tells him she will kill him for his carelessness. Emma blows off Reccoa's beam gun and tells her about Katz and Henken. She says everyone mourned their deaths in their hearts, but no one will mourn Reccoa's. Reccoa says it doesn't matter because that's the path she chose. Reccoa blows up the Shackles, and they both pull out their beam sabers. Emma sticks hers through the Palace-Athene's cockpit and destroys it. She gets out of the Mk II, and Yazan fires at the Palace-Athene, destroying it completely. The shrapnel hits Emma and cuts into her normal suit. Kamille becomes angry, and the Zeta Gundam's bio-sensor activates. With a powerful strike he slices the Hambrabi up as Yazan escapes. Kamille then grabs Emma and the two drift into a ruined battleship.

Commentary

I'm amazed how many people Tomino manages to kill here. In just one episode we see the end of Katz, Henken, Jerid and Reccoa. From the looks of it, Emma's probably going to die soon too. Though some would probably complain about killing off everyone when a sequel was in production, I think it works well here. All these deaths serve to illustrate the ferocity of war and demonstrate that no one is invincible. Katz's reckless behavior was his demise, and it looks like Jerid's luck finally ran out on him. Being thrown into an exploding ship is certainly a bad way to die. Yazan manages to escape and returns in Gundam ZZ, but there he is just a shadow of his former self. With one episode left the story isn't over yet, and neither is the death count.
