Episode 8: The Dark Side of the Moon

Review by Chris Guanche

June 13, 2000

Summary

The Alexandria enters orbit of the Moon, and Jerid watches as repairs are made on his Galbaldy Beta. Nearby, the Argama enters orbit of the Moon as well. Kamille has a strange fixation with the battle with Lila, and he won't even talk to Emma or Char. Emma tells Kamille that she's been accepted as part of the Argama's crew. She also tells him a story of how she met Amuro on Earth two years ago. She didn't know who he was then, but he seemed confined by being stuck on the Earth. She says that she realized who he was after she came to the Argama. Kamille asks if a man like Char Aznable is on the ship, and he tells her she's met Char. He starts to deny saying that when the Titans locate them. While Jerid flies around the ship menacingly, Kamille launches in the Mk II, followed by Char's Rick Dias. The Argama fires its cannons and nearly hits Kamille in the process. Jerid attacks Kamille, and the Argama heads for Granada as a distraction before going to Amman. Jerid shouts that Lila was special to him, and he vows that he'll make Kamille pay for killing her. Kamille is not used to fighting on the Moon, and he hides inside a crater. Jerid chases him and vows to show Kamille that he's not so special. Kamille hides in a trench and shoots at Jerid as he flies by. Jerid pulls out his beam saber and slices at Kamille. Kamille jumps away, but Jerid manages to knock him down. He pulls out his beam saber again and prepares to make the killing blow.

Kamille blocks the attack, but it destroys his beam rifle. He pulls out his beam saber, and he and Jerid both manage to cripple each other. Char shows up and chases Jerid off. Back on the Argama, Char tells Kamille he's inexperienced and warns him not to let the enemy control the battle or he'll die. The Alexandria lands in Granada, and Jamaican has Jerid confined. Kacricon tells Jerid he has a plan to get revenge for Lila, and he offers to use Jerid as his emergency backup. The Argama docks at Amman, and Char meets with a former Zeon officer. The officer informs Char that the asteroid Axis is moving towards Earth. Char is also supposed to meet a man called Wong Lee at a MacDaniel's fast food restaurant. The next day, Kamille and Emma head out for a ride on the surface of the Moon. They drive by the ruins of a space colony that crashed on the Moon during the One Year War and talk about the Titans. Inside Amman, Char meets with Wong Lee, who is a financial supporter of the AEUG. He wants the AEUG to attack the EFF base at Jaburo, but Char disagrees and thinks the AEUG should attack Gryps. Wong insists that they attack Jaburo, and he says destroying Jaburo will cut off support to Gryps and gain the support of the people. Kamille and Emma are attacked by Kacricon, who is wearing a jetpack. Kamille is engaged in a gun battle and is saved from a bullet by and old Haro ball robot. After chasing off Kacricon, Kamille and Emma drive back to the ship.

Commentary

This episode is actually a bit lighter than the previous one (I think practically any episode is lighter than that one). Jerid seems to be going further from the Roy Focker jet jockey type to almost being a likable character. Kamille may be a Newtype, but it's interesting to see him get beaten. One thing that was a bit weird was Emma's story about Amuro. How did she manage to meet him? And her talking about space and Amuro is some weird stuff. Also, I find it kind of odd that an old Haro just happened to be in the colony scrapyard and saved Kamille from Kacricon's bullet. How did a Haro get there anyway? Char's mention of the Axis asteroid and a woman named Haman Karn are the building blocks for future plot development. We'll have to see how this goes.
