Animated by GAINAX, famous for Neon Genesis Evangelion and Aim for the Top! Gunbuster, Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann premiered on Japanese TV in April 2007. It marks the series directorial debut of Hiroyuki Imaishi, who previously directed episodes of FLCL and Re: Cutie Honey, and penned by Kazuki Nakashima. Gurren-Lagann is set in a dismal future where humanity has been driven underground by a race of beastmen who patrol the surface in face-themed robots called Gunmen. A young boy named Simon with an affinity for drilling discovers a mysterious mecha and is swept in to an adventure across the surface to defeat the beastmen by his older brother-like friend, the boisterous Kamina. In addition to the TV series, a short OVA was produced and released with the Nintendo DS game. Two movie adaptations have been released in Japan, but have yet to be licensed in the U.S. In 2007, the series was licensed for U.S. release by ADV Films, but their license fell through, and the series has now been re-licensed by Bandai Entertainment. The series has aired on the Sci-Fi Channel and is available on DVD.
