Episode 23: The Shocking Decoy Planet

Review by Brian Shea

April 24, 2007

Summary

The Earth colony planet of Kyaral is struck by an immense attack. The Solo Ship receives the distress signal from the planet. Bes asks the crew whether they should head there. Sheryl doesn't want to experience a repeat of Ajian. Deck and Cosmo feel that it must be the Buff Clan and they want to help. The Solo Ship heads towards Kyaral. Lou cries over not getting food. Much of the crew eats in the cafeteria. Sheryl says that the Ide's power goes up when people feel fear. Joliver says a magnetic field surrounds the main engine of the ship so they can't entirely comprehend it. Kasha thinks they have enough strength to defeat the Buff Clan. The Solo Ship departs from Null Space, right in front of Kyaral. They view video of the planet and find it to be a complete wasteland. It appears that the Buff Clan used their sublight missiles against the planet. Bes orders the three Ideon units to do reconnaissance as the Solo Ship heads down to the planet. The three Ideon units take off and transform, descending into the atmosphere. The pilots don't see any life, only large smoking craters. As they approach a destroyed city, Deck detects something on the radar. The Ideo-Delta lands and Cosmo gets out. He is immediately shot at from a destroyed house. Cosmo hides beside a destroyed truck and tells the shooters that they're Earthlings. The shooters don't believe him. Cosmo manages to sneak inside the house and finds that the shooters are just a group of young children and a teenage girl, Kitty Kitten. Kitten spots Deck and decides not to fire at Cosmo, who warns them of an upcoming Buff Clan attack. Cosmo returns to the Ideo-Delta and a Ganga Lubu piloted by Daram soon approaches. The two mecha immediately do battle with one another.

Kitten and the children seek refuge underground. The Ideo-Delta blasts the Ganga Lubu multiple times but is unable to damage it due to a barrier. The Ganga Lubu grabs ahold of the Ideo-Delta with wires and electrocutes it. Attempting to free itself, the Ideo-Delta flies between two buildings and is able to escape. The Ideo-Buster and Ideo-Nova soon approach. Daram contacts Gije, who attacks them with his own Ganga Lubu. The three Ideon units attempt to dock into its humanoid form. Daram attacks them while docking, and the units split up. Cosmo flies the Ideo-Delta into Daram's Ganga Lubu, knocking it away. The Ideon successfully docks and is immediately attacked by Gije. Daram also attacks but his Ganga Lubu is destroyed. Daram takes off in his escape capsule and attacks the Ideon with a miniature nuclear bomb. The bomb explodes as Gije and Daram head into the atmosphere. Daram explains to Gije that the bomb is just a test and that the Giant God would be worthless to them if it couldn't survive that attack. The Ideon ends up unscathed from the attack. On the Gabro Zan Gije and Daram discuss the Giant God. Gije thinks they should try boarding the Giant God themselves. Fighting on behalf of the Ome Foundation, they want to use the Giant God to overthrow the Buff Clan emperor. Daram says Doba has the same plans. Deck shows the children from Kyaral the Ideon. Cosmo and Kitten talk nearby. Kitten tells Cosmo that the Buff Clan probably wouldn't have come if not for them. She says she and all the children are orphans and that they want the Solo Ship to leave. Parkinson, the leader of Kyaral's forces tells Bes that they won't give them any supplies. Kitten tells Cosmo that the people of Kyaral think of them as the enemy. Cosmo yells out that the Solo Ship crew have lost their families as well.

Commentary

The show heads in a new direction as the Solo Ship arrives on the destroyed colony planet of Kyaral. The Solo Ship finds their encounter to be similar to that on Ajian, with the survivors on Kyaral viewing them as an enemy. Cosmo meets Kitty Kitten, who will be a fairly important character over the next few episodes. Cosmo's conversation with her at the end of the episode would eventually be used as the intro to the ending movie Be Invoked. New developments arise with the Buff Clan as well when its revealed that Daram and Gije are working for the "Ome Foundation," a corporation that seeks to overthrow the Buff Clan emperor. Overall, a fairly good episode; have no real complaints.
