Episode 38: The Space Runaway

Review by Brian Shea

June 3, 2007

Summary

Aboard the Solo Ship Bes and the others watch the Buff Clan surround them from hundreds of thousands of light years away. Joliver says that due to the Ide the power of their radar has increased tremendously. Suddenly Kasha notices that a force is approaching them from nearby. The Solo Ship enters DS Drive, escaping from them. Buff Clan forces are still able to detect them. Gije and the other pilots wonder how the Buff Clan can still track them accurately despite all the transmitters being removed. Gije realizes that the power of the Ide must be so great that they are able to be detected. The Buff Clan catches up to the Solo Ship and attacks. The three Ideon units launch and destroy the surrounding Buff Clan forces. Harulu contacts Kodomon Muron who rallies his troops to head out and attack the solo Ship. The Solo Ship heads down to the planet Steckin Star, which is filled with many large plants. The crew plans on getting some rest. Gije goes to see Sheryl and finds her getting drunk in her room. Sheryl wonders where they can run to. Gije says to the end of the universe, and that its probably their fate to always be running away. Sheryl is still upset over her sister's death. Kodomon leads a large force of Adigos down to Steckin Star. Kasha spots Karala cleaning Bes's ears on the bridge. Kasha heads to the Ideo-Delta cockpit where Cosmo is working on the computer. She gets in the cockpit chair and falls asleep. Cosmo shuts off the light and covers her with a blanket. Gije pleads with Sheryl to stop drinking. A crying Sheryl asks why the Earth and Buff Clan couldn't have gotten along and collapses in Gije's arms. Gije thinks the Ide is testing them but Sheryl doesn't understand how killing Lin could be a test.

The alarm goes off, waking everyone up. Gije leaves Sheryl in bed. The pilots head to the Ideon units and launch. Deck and Gije ask Cosmo about what was going on with him and Kasha. Cosmo jokes about the two of them sleeping together. Bes has the Solo Ship hide underneath a large leaf. The Ideo-Delta gets stuck to one of the leaves on Steckin Star, which appear to be carnivorous lifeforms. Kodomon's forces arrive and face similar trouble with the plant life. Hatari and Bes watch the radar as additional forces surround the planet. Bes orders the Solo Ship to launch so it can escape from Steckin Star. Harulu's forces tell her that the 126th combat team will soon be arriving from Null Space. Harulu plans on attacking once they arrive. She thinks of how the Giant God reunited her with Daram, but regrets what happened during their encounter. Gije and Bento have trouble aboard the Ideo-Nova, which is swarmed by the Adigos. Kodomon has his forces focus on the Solo Ship as it heads out. The attacks awaken Sheryl, who wonders where Gije is. The Ideo-Buster is seized by an Adigo. The Ideo-Nova saves it by smashing into them, but as a result gets stuck on a leaf. Kodomon has his Adigos focus their fire on the Ideo-Nova. The Adigo's blasts go right through the barrier, and strike Gije. Suddenly, the Ideon gauge starts glowing and all three units move on their own, combining into the Ideon. The Ideon immediately uses its Ideon swords and starts blasting through Steckin Star. Kodomon and his forces are vaporized. Gije says that the Ide has been invoked. The Ideon swords slice right through Steckin Star. The 126th Combat team arrives just as the blast from the Ideon swords comes through Steckin Star, completely destroying them. Harulu's ship narrowly escapes. Steckin Star splits in two. Harulu orders her forces to escape into Null Space. The Ideon lands on the Solo Ship and they too enter DS Drive. Bes and the others arrive at the Ideo-Nova, where Cosmo and Bento are tending to Gije's corpse. Joliver and Tekuno prevent the hysterical Sheryl from getting aboard the Ideo-Nova. Sheryl screams out about why everyone in her life has to die.

Commentary

Considering how things go down in the final episode (which I'll discuss next time) this is probably the best episode in the entire TV series. The animation is top notch, better than any other episode and nearly as good as that in Be Invoked. There's excellent music as well, particularly in the scene with Gije and Sheryl around the halfway point, and during the scene where the Ideon destroys Steckin Star. Speaking of that, the Ideon displays its most destructive power in the entire series in this episode where it is able to literally chop the entire planet of Steckin Star in half with the Ideon Swords. This sequence would be played during the opening credits of Be Invoked. It was nice to have some scenes featuring 'down time' with the crew, particularly Gije and Sheryl's last conversation. Gije's story comes to an end as he is killed by the Adigos on Steckin Star. Sheryl, who just lost her sister in the last episode now loses her lover as well. She was already appearing to lose it in this episode, and this will probably drive her even further over the edge. Only one episode remains...
