Episode 4: Escape from Planet Solo

Review by Brian Shea

February 12, 2007

Summary

The Ideon, led by Cosmo, chases after the escaping Buff Clan crafts. Gije and the others are able to escape due to a cloud of smoke from a missile attack. Aboard the Solo Ship, Bes questions why the ship can be moving. Mayaya is able to break open the door of the room Karala and her were locked in. The two head out into the hall and realize that the Solo Ship is flying. The Solo Ship lands on the ground soon afterwards and the Ideon heads towards it. Meanwhile in space Damido tries to make the case to Abadede that the aliens are hostile and will kill their prisoners. Gije thinks they shouldn't continue to provoke the enemy and should trust in Karala. Abadede instructs them to prepare the Heavy Mobile Mecha for the next battle. Cosmo rests on the Sol Amber while technicians work on it and the other crafts. Bes tries to convince Kasha to rest after the battle. Bes, Sheryl and the others meet in the forest dome contained within the Solo Ship. Sheryl wants to fly away from planet Solo using the DS Drive engine, but Bes thinks the Buff Clan could still come after them. Later on, Lotta loses Lou in the forest but he is found by Karala, who she thinks is a recent Earthling colonist. Karala is surprised to see trees growing inside the Solo Ship. Mayaya wonders if it is the power of the Ide. Cosmo, Bes and the others head out on the three Ideon crafts and test their weapons on a nearby island. They find that the aim is off, but the weapons are still powerful. Tekuno explains to Kasha how they've moved the weapons on the Ideo-Buster to be better equipped in the next battle when they transform. Kasha is upset over all the changes she has to get used to. Damido leads a squadron of Copolas and Decka Baus towards Solo. Abadede allows Gije to head out after him. Damido's troops land on Solo and head out in Gadakka walkers towards the Solo Ship.

Damido and Birasu make their way onto the Solo Ship. With its energy at 80%, the Solo Ship lifts off and they are forced to jump off of it. Damido decides to wait for the Giant God to show up before attacking with the Decka Baus. The Solo Ship lands at a nearby city and loads supplies. Karala and Mayaya eat inside of the Solo Ship. A cadet, Moera, meets Sheryl on the bridge of the Solo Ship and gets frustrated with her. The three Ideon crafts battle with Gije's forces in the air. Damido's forces make their attack on the defenseless Solo Ship. The Ideo-Buster is damaged, but the Ideon gauge becomes active and the three crafts start docking into the Ideon. Gije orders his troops to focus their attack on the Ideon's eye. He calls out to Damido, asking him to assist him. Aboard the Solo Ship, Joliver wants to take off, but due to their lack of weapons and all the civilians aboard, Sheryl wants to stay on the ground. The Ideon has trouble moving with its legs malfunctioning, and falls down during the battle. The Ideon Gauge aboard the Solo Ship starts glowing and it takes off on its own, heading towards the Ideon. Once it arrives, the Ideon jumps aboard the ship and it blasts off, destroying much of the landscape around it with its anti-matter engine. The Solo Ship blasts off into space, disappearing from sight.

Commentary

The mysteries continue in this episode as the Solo Ship starts moving on its own. The Ideon's power continues to fluctuate wildly and in this episode it has quite a tough time with Gije's Gil Baus before the Solo Ship arrives. Overall a rather dull episode with extremely poor animation, even for a show from 1980. Luckily things pick up in the next episode.
