Episode 5: Infinite Power - Legendary Ide

Review by Brian Shea

February 12, 2007

The Solo Ship flies through space using its Null Space Drive. The Ideon's pilots leave and head onto the bridge. Ships with a "DS Drive' can travel at great speeds through dimensions and time will pass at a slower rate. Meanwhile Gije and Damido's forces return to their mother ship. Abadede wants them to prepare for Null Space battle, but the Solo Ship suddenly exits from Null Space - arriving right back at planet Solo! The Buff Clan changes plans and Abadede orders another attack which will distract the Earthlings, giving Gije a chance to rescue Karala. Gije leads a squad of Copolas, Decka Baus and Gil Baus down to Solo. Supplies are loaded onto the Solo Ship as the Buff Clan arrives to attack. Despite being in the middle of repairs, the Ideon's pilots return to it in order to counterattack. The Ideon initially has trouble with its balance not working well, and it remains standing on top of the Solo Ship. Although the Ideon is knocked over, the enemy suddenly retreats unexpectedly. Gije lands and heads through the forest on a Gadakka with his subordinate. Gije sneaks towards the landing site and encounters Karala. Gije tells Karala to return to the mothership, but Karala wants to remain and investigate the connection between the Solo Ship and Giant God. Sheryl spots them leaving and holds them at gunpoint. Gije manages to kick the gun out of her hand and take it, but Joliver arrives and chases Gije away. Sheryl holds Karala captive, thinking she's a spy.

Joliver chases Gije back to the woods but must stop when Gije's subordinate fires at him. Karala is held captive by everyone outside of the Solo Ship and is questioned by Bes and Sheryl. Karala explains that the Buff Clan comes from a planet that they also call Earth, and is searching for the Ide, an infinite power. Mayaya arrives and says not to harm Karala because her father is very important. Gije sets off an explosion causing most of the civilians to flee. He, along with Karala and Mayaya head into the Solo Ship in an attempt to steal the Ideon. Gije overpowers Cosmo and heads into the cockpit of the Ideo-Buster. Gije finds himself unable to get it to move however, and they are recaptured. Bes and Sheryl question Gije, Karala and Mayaya about the location of their home planet. Sheryl explains how the Ideon was created by the Sixth Civilization, named that way because it was the sixth alien civilization mankind encountered (the Buff Clan is the seventh). Karala explains to them the legend of Ide, where the queen of the Buff Clan was captured by a monster and the Buff Clan where brought to the brink of extinction. A hero arrived to fight the monster but didn't have the strength to beat it. Suddenly a fruit appeared and when it was eaten by the hero, he gained the power of the Ide, defeated the monster, and afterwards ruled the planet in peace with the queen. Cosmo and Bes get upset about how so many have died over such a foolish sounding legend. Karala thinks the legend is true due to the appearance of the Ideon. Gije wants to see their research on the Ide but Sheryl and the others refuse. Damido meanwhile convinces Abadede to allow him to lead another attack on the Solo Ship. Everyone heads off and Gije manages to overtake the guard watching them. The Ideon heads out to fight the enemy. Karala and Mayaya leave the Solo Ship and are almost killed by a falling tower, but Bes saves them with the Ideon's hand. Mayaya under Karala's direction throws out a cease fire signal and the Buff Clan pulls back.

This episode introduces us to the Buff Clan's Legend of Ide. I agree with Bes and Cosmo's initial assessment that it seems like a foolish fairy tale and its unbelievable that so many have died because of it. The true meaning behind the Ide will become more clear as the series goes on. This episode also introduces us to the Solo Ship's DS Drive capabilities, which allows it to travel at great speeds through a dimension known as Null Space. It mysteriously has little effect in its first use though, bringing our heroes right back to Solo. The revelations of the Ide and the confrontation between our heroes and their three Buff Clan captives make this somewhat a more interesting episode than the last.
