Episode 9: Burning Null Space

Review by Brian Shea

February 26, 2007

In the forest dome Kasha continues to argue with Bes about them not killing Gije when they had the chance. Joliver and Sheryl join in on the conversation. Sheryl doesn't think they should have let the enemy escape. Cosmo gets upset, thinking he is thought of as only a kid. Sheryl says their success is due to their technology. Bes says the only reason the Buff Clan hasn't killed them yet is because they have Karala. On the Gram Zan Damido taunts Gije, who is feeling humiliated after the last battle. The two of them are called to the Gataman Zan to see Abadede. Abadede doesn't want to wait for Harulu's reinforcements to arrive and wants to attack the Solo Ship, using Gije's Gram Zan as a decoy. Gije consents to going along with his plans. On Saurus Star a dinosaur runs towards the Solo Ship, disrupting their repairs. Other angry dinosaurs appear nearby as well. On the bridge Bes plans to escape to another planet when news of an approaching enemy arrives. The Gram Zan approaches the Solo Ship, with the intention of drawing it into Null Space. A squadron of Copolas and Decka Baus departs from the ship. Moera tells Cosmo that he's replacing Bes as one of the pilots on the Ideon. Cosmo struggles piloting the Ideon when the power goes up and down immensely. The Ideon heads out over the sea to battle the enemy. Kasha wants to separate into the three Ideon units but Cosmo and Moera refuse. The enemy makes it past the Ideon and towards the Solo Ship. The Buff Clan fires at the Solo Ship, which soon takes off. Gije plans to make the enemy think the Gram Zan is in trouble. The decoy works, as Cosmo leads the Ideon towards it. Bes decides as well to send the Solo Ship towards the Gram Zan.

Karala is brought to the bridge and says that they shouldn't underestimate Gije. She thinks they may be being led into a trap. The Ideon and Solo Ship reach space, where they are quickly struck by an attack. Karala thinks Gije is intending to lure the Solo Ship into Null Space where Abadede will attack them. Bes wants to activate the DS Drive engine and escape, although the enemy will still be able to track them. Sheryl says she doesn't believe what Karala is saying. The Ideon lands on the Solo Ship, which takes off into Null Space. The Buff Clan ships quickly head into Null Space themselves. Cosmo heads to Moera's cockpit and argues with him since he didn't do well in the last battle. He also checks with various members of the crew to see why the power isn't acting to its full potential. Cosmo looks outside and realizes that the Buff Clan is pursuing them. Damido's Giran Dou is launched from the Gataman Zan and attacks the Solo Ship and Ideon. The Gataman Zan moves forward towards the Solo Ship. Bes wants to activate the DS Drive brake, but Hatari says it won't work. Karala thinks that her father and sister don't care if she lives since the Buff Clan is attacking them so fiercely. The Ideon is about to attack but the Gram Zan rams itself kamikaze style into the Solo Ship. Gije escapes using the Gram Zan's escape capsule. The Ideon is able to lift up the colliding Gram Zan and move its path away from the Solo Ship. The Gram Zan hits the border of Null Space and blows up, but not before launching a tracking device onto the Solo Ship. The Solo Ship's DS Brake activates, pulling them out of Null Space. Bes thanks Cosmo and the others for their effort in the battle. Cosmo is mad at Sheryl for criticizing others so much.

This episode is similar to episode 7, with another battle occurring in Null Space. It was rather disappointing to see them use a similar premise in two out of the last three episodes. The Buff Clan's attack is as fierce as ever, leading Karala to wonder whether the Buff Clan has abandoned her. Despite its fluctuations in power, the Ideon is perhaps as strong as its ever been as it manages to move the Gram Zan out of the path of the Solo Ship. Overall another somewhat disappointing episode, although the plot does finally start going somewhere starting with the next episode.
