Macross Plus
Released
in 1994, Macross Plus is set
thirty years after the original and almost completely on the colonial
planet Eden. This series is darker than all the others and focuses
more on drama than it does plot. Much like the original series,
a love triangle is present here, as is lots of music. This time,
the love triangle involves two men and one woman who all have
a shared past. The series is directed by Shoji Kawamori and Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo), with an excellent soundtrack from famed composer Yoko Kanno (Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop Turn A Gundam). The purpose of this series was to update
the look of the Macross franchise to pave the way for the
TV series Macross 7, which debuted in the same year. In
1995, Kawamori released a special feature film version which fits his original intention for the project. Manga
Entertainment released the series in the U.S. soon after its release
in Japan, and it has become one of their bestselling titles. In
1999, Manga re-released the series on DVD and followed up with
the movie in 2002.
