Summary

Basara plays guitar near the ruins of the Macross 5 fleet. Max speaks over video to Milia and tells her they'll have to stay on Lux for a while until the fleet finishes repairs. Milia orders Gamlin to keep up his patrols and gives him her condolences on Kinryu. Gamlin gets a video mail message from Mylene, asking him to come to a hastily organized concert designed to cheer people up. Chiba shows the band and Akiko what he calls the sound energy system. He explains that there's a strange power to Fire Bomber's music, and he wants to convert that power into energy. Chiba explains that this has been his dream ever since he learned about Minmay's singing in Space War I. Chiba puts a song energy converter vest on Mylene as she sings "Sweet Fantasy." Akiko complains that nothing is happening, but when Chiba turns off the lights, Mylene begins to glow with song energy. Basara stops playing and walks off, ignoring Mylene. She thinks that he's feeling jealous over what she just did, but he ignores her and keeps walking away. Guvava joins Basara, and Chiba says that to unleash the real power of song energy, they need someone with Basara's potential. Elsewhere, Irane tells Max and a military panel about his experience when his unit performed recon on the Varauta system. He begins to panic when he mentions a cave, and Exsedol concludes that it must be Protodeviln. Max asks what the Protodeviln are, and Exsedol explains that once a single Protodeviln destroyed an entire Zentradi fleet. On the fourth planet of the Varauta system, the Protodeviln Glavil awakens, and that's felt by both Geperuniti and Gigile. A recon fleet from the Macross 7 that is sent to the Varauta system is destroyed by Glavil as it heads to Lux. Mylene continues to sing with the song energy converter, but she collapses from the effort. Chiba says she won't be able to do it, but she's determined to succeed.

Outside, Basara tries to sing, but no words come out of his mouth. Guvava jumps around, and Basara follows him back to City 7 and a hill overlooking the Fire Bomber concert. As the concert begins, Mylene starts singing "Planet Dance." Gamlin arrives at the concert and sits down next to the flower girl. When Mylene sees Gamlin, she begins to glow with song energy, and the visible stream of energy reaches out across the stage to Gamlin. It then vanishes momentarily, and Akiko concludes that Mylene is hesitating. Gamlin cheers Mylene on, and the song energy changes from blue to pink, reaching out to Gamlin. Basara arrives and grabs his guitar. The song energy then changes to purple and shifts to Basara, then back to pink and Gamlin. The energy then splits into two streams, and Chiba shouts for Mylene to make up her mind. Glavil crashes on Lux near the Macross 7 fleet, and a battle alert is sounded. Max looks at the scan of Glavil, and Exsedol says it's a Protodeviln. Diamond and Sound Forces approach Glavil, but they break off when it blasts a Macross Cannon-level energy discharge. Battle 7 protects itself with a pinpoint barrier, and Chiba tells Basara to sing with the song energy system. Ray asks Mylene to continue with the concert because Basara has lost his voice. Mylene continues to sing and approaches Glavil, but Chiba says it isn't enough power. Glavil reaches out and grabs Mylene with its hand. Gamlin opens fire, and Glavil attempts to swallow Mylene, but Basara's Excalibur holds its mouth open. He tries to sing and is unable to, so Mylene begins singing "Holy Lonely Light" and glows with song energy. Glavil squeezes her Thunderbolt, causing her to be ejected from the cockpit. Gamlin swoops in with his Nightmare and saves her, and she tells him she can't run away. Song energy from Mylene hits Basara and restores his voice, allowing him to sing. Basara and Mylene sing together, and their song energy protects them from Glavil's energy blast. Their own energy pushes back, forcing Glavil to break off and escape. Chiba declares that song energy is incredible. Basara tells Mylene that her song did it, and they begin singing again.

Commentary

There's certainly some trouble now, as the Protodeviln Glavil has awakened and come to Lux. Luckily, Chiba has developed a system that converts Fire Bomber's music into song energy, aka Spiritia. Basara doesn't participate, and it's not until later that we learn it's because he lost his voice. Mylene ends up using the converter herself, with some very visible results at the Fire Bomber concert. The shifting energy represents her wavering feelings between Basara and Gamlin, thus highlighting the love triangle of this series. It's clear to people like Akiko what's going on, and even Gamlin sees it and isn't happy about it. He'd made a comment previously that Mylene shines the most when she's with Basara, and this episode literally reinforces that.
