Summary

The stolen Varauta battleship folds out near the Macross 7 fleet. Mylene is glad to be back, and when Gamlin says everyone didn't make it, Max tells him they should be happy any of them survived. Gamlin goes down to the hangar and sees a flashing light on a door panel. When he opens the door, Gavil comes out of it and possesses him, saying he'll have the beauty of war. Later, Max meets with Milia and other officers to discuss the mission. Max says that there are still captives from the Macross 5 in the Varauta system. One officer asks Max to give permission for all ships to use reaction weapons. After the meeting, Milia tells Max she's glad he made it back. On the bridge, Max tells Exsedol to investigate Anima Spiritia with Chiba, because he believes it's Basara's singing. Akiko and the rest of the band have a drink to celebrate their return, but Basara just sits there and plays guitar. Mylene has Basara's drink and gets a bit tipsy, blaming Basara for her drinking alcohol. The possessed Gamlin sucks Spiritia from several people, including Dick and Morley. Gamlin goes up to Milia's office, and she senses discomfort, but he sucks her Spiritia. Outside, he tries to suck the Spiritia of Basara's fangirl, but his attention is called away by Mylene. Guvava reacts negatively and intervenes when Gamlin tries to suck Mylene's Spiritia. A blimp flies overhead playing "Holy Lonely Light," and the discomfort from the music forces Gamlin to run away. Miho patches in a police officer to tell Max that Milia, Dick and Morley have suffered vampire attacks. On Battle 7, several Thunderbolt hangars explode, destroying many units in the process. Barton wonders what's going on and sees Gamlin's Nightmare destroying everything in sight. The news is reported to Max, who orders Emerald Force to attack. Ray hears the news, and Mylene says there was something off about Gamlin, so Sound Force launches.

Gamlin blasts his way out into space and begins firing on Battle 7's runway. Docker tries to contact him, but Gamlin says nothing. Docker asks Max if he should attack, but Basara blocks him when he locks on. Mylene says something is wrong, and Docker thinks Gamlin's crimes are too big to even get a trial. Gamlin flies by, and Basara starts singing "Try Again." Gamlin is affected by the music, and Ray wonders if he's possessed by a Protodeviln. Mylene starts singing as well and hits Gamlin with her song energy. Max asks Chiba if song energy can force a Protodeviln out of Gamlin, but Chiba doesn't know. Barton calls Max and says they have chance to destroy a Protodeviln if they can get it a safe distance away from Gamlin. He wants to use reaction weapons, which Exsedol points out would kill Gamlin, and Barton counters that sacrifices are necessary. Max responds that he's letting Sound Force handle the situation. Gamlin screams out in pain from the music and regains his senses, but Max tells them not to lower their guard yet. Mylene flies over to Gamlin, but he is still possessed and takes her Thunderbolt hostage. Chiba realizes that Gamlin's body is acting as a filter and won't let the sound energy reach Gavil. Gamlin destroys Basara's sound boosters and flies way. Barton and several other officers again press Max to use reaction weapons, and Exsedol says using them would kill Sound Force too. Max orders the reaction weapons to be put on standby under his control. Exsedol asks if he has a plan, but Max says he'll just be the one to push the button. A Varauta battleship folds out nearby, and Gamlin heads toward it. Basara calls Gamlin and offers to trade himself for Mylene. Mylene thinks about how Gamlin always rescues her, but this time it's her turn to save him. She breaks out of his hold and goes into space to open his cockpit. Gamlin grabs her, but she begins to glow with song energy as she sings "Light the Light." The song energy overwhelms Gamlin, forcing Gavil to abandon his body and escape to the Varauta battleship. Exsedol asks Max if he was really going to push the button, and Max answers that he would've if it became necessary. On the ship, Chiba examines sleeping Gamlin and tells Mylene he'll be ok. Ray tells Mylene that her feelings got through to Gamlin with her singing, and Basara says she doesn't get it. She asks him what he means, but he won't say.

Commentary

It's almost ironic that Gavil has to possess his most hated rival to be able to accomplish anything. However, taking over Gamlin allows Gavil to suck the Spiritia of nearly everyone in sight, including his attempt on Basara's fangirl and Mylene. He probably also causes a few casualties when he destroys all those Thunderbolt hangars. Docker, as always, seems a bit too itchy with his trigger finger, so it's a good thing that Basara directly intervened. This time, regular song energy didn't work, so it took Mylene's direct contact with Gamlin to knock him back to his senses. What she doesn't understand is that it wasn't just her song that reached Gamlin, but also her feelings for him. She doesn't see it for herself since she's conflicted in her feelings between Gamlin and Basara.
