Genesis Climber Mospeada
By the time Genesis Climber Mospeada aired in 1983, many mecha series were showcasing the transforming jets made popular a year earlier by Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Although unrelated to Macross, Harmony Gold combined Mospeada with Macross and Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross to form the 1985 U.S. series Robotech. Directed by Katsuhisa Yamada (Devil Hunter Yohko), the series tells the story of an Earth occupied by the mysterious Inbit alien race. Two efforts by the Mars Base to recapture Earth have failed, and the series focuses on a young soldier named Stick Bernard who assembles a ragtag group of fighters on a journey from South America to the Inbit's North American headquarters at Reflex Point. Mospeada's staff included up-and-coming members such as character designer Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy), mechanical designer Shinji Aramaki (Gasaraki, Viper's Creed) and composer Joe Hisaishi (Studio Ghibli). In 1985, a music video OVA named Love, Live, Alive was released in Japan, but it isn't available anywhere else. For many years, the original uncut version of Mospeada was unavailable in the U.S. until ADV Films released it on DVD in 2003. The 2006 Robotech movie The Shadow Chronicles used some character and mecha designs from Mospeada, but it was an original Robotech production with no connection to Mospeada.
