Nadesico

Martian Successor Nadesico

Martian Successor Nadesico (aka Mobile Battleship Nadesico) premiered in 1996 and became an instant classic among anime fans for its surprisingly solid mix of humor, drama, and action. While maintaining a serious plot about mysterious alien invaders and shady politics, Nadesico managed to parody several anime staples (such as the old super robot shows and 'harem' romantic comedies). Directed by Tatsuo Sato, Nadesico follows the story of Akito Tenkawa, a Martian refugee who wants nothing more than to become a cook, and the slightly oddball crew of the privately-funded high mobile battleship Nadesico as they try to fight off a robotic invasion originating from Jupiter. The show's popularity would go on to spawn several video games, The Prince of Darkness feature film sequel, and a one episode OVA featuring Gekiganger 3, Nadesico's anime-within-an-anime. The series was released in North America on DVD in 2000 by ADV Films, with the movie following in 2003. The Gekiganger 3 OVA is not available in the U.S.
