Episode 23: Destroyer

Review by Chris Guanche

Summary

Kei snacks on chips and asks Maai about Reeg, so she explains that he's been busy working on a new space-time transformation device. Kei says he doesn't know what that is and dismisses it as useless junk, which Maai says is rude. She accuses him of being negligent due to the lack of Chiram attacks, so he leaves to work on maintaining Orguss. Mimsy finds him in the hangar and asks if he's still angry, but he says he isn't. He thinks he's useless and wonders how he can save the world. Mimsy tells him he isn't doing things alone, but she leaves when he declines to come back with him. At Chiram headquarters, a scientist shows White the D system that will mirror the effect of the space-time oscillation bomb and restore the world. He explains that unlike the bomb, human consciousness isn't required. White orders a test to be run, and the scientist explains that it'll restore a piece of pre-chaos Earth, so it's almost like time travel. Mimsy and Mohm argue over folding Kei's underwear, and suddenly he and Olson cry out in pain and disappear in a glowing light. White and his men find themselves outside of Tina's house and watch Kei run away with Olson, who drives his motorcycle right through them without even noticing their presence. Two of the men recognize Kei and Olson, and White thanks the scientist for his work. Two Mu robots suddenly appear, so the machine is deactivated. Kei and Olson stop feeling pain, but the Mu robots appear inside Chiram headquarters. Shaia explains to Reeg what happened, so he concludes that the Chiram must've completed the D system. Because of that, he thinks they might want to kill the Singularities as soon as possible. The two Mu robots wreak havoc until they're destroyed by Athena's Nikick squad. White reflects on how difficult things will be now that the Mu know about the D system.

Mohm reads the results of a medical exam and concludes that Kei is healthy. Kei steals a kiss from Mimsy and jumps away when she tries to slap him. Mimsy wonders why Kei is acting so strangely, and Olson says that something must be bothering him if he's acting like that. Olson tells Mimsy that they're the only ones Kei can speak to, and Mimsy asks Olson whom he speaks to. Olson later joins Kei and says he knows about what's bothering him, and he feels the same about the job they have to do. Three Mu robots move through the jungle and emerge near where the Glomar and Budoru's ship have landed. Kei hops into Orguss when the Mu attack and takes off to fight them. Budoru's ship deploys Deemoras and Orguss IIs, and Jahby asks Taii why he isn't outside fighting. The Mu focus their attack on Budoru's ship and the Orguss IIs. Olson joins the battle in his Orguss II as the Emaan evacuate the ship. Kei and Olson pull back as parts of the ship explode. They blast their way in and find no sign of the Mu. Reeg starts collecting materials to abandon ship, but just then a Mu robot smashes into the room. Reeg picks up a gun, but Budoru tells him to escape and use his knowledge to rebuild the space-time device. Budoru gives Reeg time to escape and is killed when the device is destroyed. Kei and Olson emerge from the ship just before it explodes and crashes.

Commentary

The story takes a jump as the Chiram complete the D system and conduct a test of it. Although White and the others don't realize it, they've witnessed the events immediately preceding Kei setting the bomb off and creating the fractured Earth. Unfortunately, the D system has a negative effect on Kei and Olson, and it attracts the attention of the Mu. The Mu invading Chiram headquarters are destroyed, but a second force succeeds in destroying Reeg's space-time device on Budoru's ship. Kei spends most of the episode in a bad mood, and it looks like he's faltering again after already going back and forth about what he has to do. Hopefully his resolve sticks this time.
