Movement 1: Invasion of the Capital/Overlord

Summary

Military forces launch from an aircraft carrier in the Pacific Ocean and head into a dome that resembles Jupiter. Seventeen-year-old Ayato Kamina admires one of his paintings before his alarm goes off. He sees a note from his mom telling him she’ll be late and he leaves for school while a woman watches him. The woman, Haruka Shitow, follows him and slips a tracking device into his school bag. Ayato feels he’s being watched and turns around to see no one. He meets with his friends Hiroko Asahina and Mamoru Torigai and they rush off to catch the train to school. Two agents report that Ayato isn’t at home and that their first line of defense may have been breached. The train Ayato and the others are on is suddenly rocked violently and everyone is tossed around. Ayato comes to and after seeing to his friends, runs off to find help. He leaves the tunnel to see enemy planes in the air. The defense force fights back, but they are easily beaten back as Ayato runs through Tokyo. After he is nearly crushed by a building, he hears singing and follows it to find a girl standing on some rubble. He calls out to her and recognizes her as his classmate, Reika Mishima.

Ayato and Reika take shelter under an overpass when they hear singing. They run out and see the giant dolem Allegretto, which shoots down enemy planes. Ayato and Reika continue to run and are spotted by the two agents who fly over in a helicopter. Ayato heads down to a train but notices Reika is gone. The agents confront Ayato and try to take him away. He demands an explanation but a gun is put to his head. Haruka runs out and takes out the agents, drawing blue blood from one of them. Ayato picks up a fallen gun and points it at Haruka, asking who she is. She says she’s a champion of justice because she just saved him, and Ayato hands the gun over to her. He thanks her and goes to leave, but Haruka says he’s wondering why the blood was blue. She says if he goes with her, she’ll tell him the truth about the world. Ayato says he’s not interested in older women and she pulls the gun on him. Ayato sees Reika on the train and an agent grabs Haruka from behind. Ayato runs to the train and it takes off. He pounds the door and wonders what’s going on. Reika asks what’s going to happen to them and Ayato promises to protect her. The train stops at the Xephon shrine and the pair depart and continue on. Outside, another dolem, Fortissimo, is sent into the battle. Ayato and Reika arrive in a large room with a giant egg in the center. Allegretto and Fortissimo resonate with each other and shatter glass and destroy enemies all around them. Giant floating cities appear in the sky and the singing voices cause Ayato to collapse. Reika also sings when the egg starts to glow. Reika tells Ayato he must awaken and he calls out for the RahXephon. A giant wing shoots out of the egg. Haruka looks up at the cities and identifies them as the Mu, the enemy of all mankind.

Commentary

So begins RahXephon, the series that has often been denounced as a mere Evangelion clone. Though there are some similarities, this is not the case. Ayato is a regular high school student who, aside from an over busy mom, doesn’t have many problems. That’s all about to change with Tokyo coming under attack and his meeting with the mysterious Reika, who seems to be connected to what’s going on. Haruka is also introduced and she’ll be a main player later on. One can’t really say Ayato ‘stumbled’ into his (clay) mech, more like he was led to it. We don’t even get to see the RahXephon, so we’ll have to wait for the next episode to see what it can do.
