Stage 16: Only One Crash

Review by Peter Laliberte

March 10, 2011

Summary

Archibald admires the Sol Gravilion, noting that its armor has machine cells in it. Agilla says she’ll be using it to recover Latooni. In a dream, Levi asks Mai how long she’s going to stay with the enemy and reminds her that she is Levi Tolar. Mai wakes and remembers Levi’s name. Daitetsu is informed of another change in rendezvous points and Tetsuya notes the joint with the Neo DC isn’t working so well. In a briefing, Ryusei says he understands that Mai and Aya need to link minds to use the Buster Cannon, but still questions keeping Mai a secret from the others. Rai asks if there’s more to that and Viletta gives in, explaining that Levi still exists within Mai. Ryusei asks if Mai will become their enemy again just as Mai enters the room. Mai runs away and Ryusei and Aya chase her. Mai bumps into Arado, Latooni and Shine, muttering that she is Levi. Latooni recognizes the name as the Aerogator commander’s and Mai runs away again. Ryusei and Aya meet up with the other three, and they all give chase. Levi’s voice tells Mai to leave. Rai asks Viletta why she made Mai pilot the R-Gun even though Levi still existed, and Viletta says that the SRX needs to be at top capacity for the coming battles. She says that they could have altered Mai’s memory to erase Levi, but it was risky and could have destroyed her identity. They decided to bet on Mai overcoming Levi herself, but just made things worse like Ingram did. Viletta explains that she is Ingram’s copy and is meant to fight off the coming threats with the SRX team. Viletta turns to leave, but Rai says he’ll go too. He says everyone has a past, but right now they’re all part of the SRX team. Aya tells Latooni and the others about Mai, and Arado notes it’s like Seolla and Ouka. Ryusei says it’s his fault, but Aya says Mai and herself need to face the truth. The R-Gun launches and Latooni, Shine and Arado volunteer to go after her with Ryusei and Aya.

Mai finds herself in the R-Gun and soon runs into Neo DC forces lead by Agilla and Ouka. Agilla says they’ll use the R-Gun as bait and take the pilot as a research sample if they’re a Psychodriver. Levi talks to Mai again, but Mai shakes her off while avoiding Ouka’s attack. Ouka tells Mai to give up, and Agilla recognizes her as a test subject from the Special Center for Brain Study. Ouka grabs the R-Gun, but Ryusei arrives and shoots her off. Mai asks why he followed her since she’s his enemy, but he says she’s not anymore. The others arrive and Aya says that Mai is still her little sister and apologizes for making her pilot without knowing everything. She adds that they need Mai’s power to fight off the Inspectors. Agilla greets everyone, referring to Latooni as ‘Latooni-11’ and saying that she doesn’t need a name, only a number. Aya asks who Agilla is, and Agilla notes that Kenzo must have altered Aya’s memories. Agilla tells them that Aya and Mai aren’t sisters and aren’t Kenzo’s daughters either. She says her and Kenzo created their memories, and proves that by talking about an incident where Aya hurt Mai but didn’t tell anyone about it. She adds that the trauma was used to enhance Aya’s ability as a Psychodriver. The revelation is too much for Aya and the R-3 drops to the ground. Mai cries about even her lost memories being fake and wonders what she is. Agilla laughs at how Kenzo took pity on his subjects and kept it a secret. Ryusei asks what Agilla thinks Aya and Mai are, and she answers that they’re just samples. Ryusei gets mad and both sides clash. Arado takes on Ouka, saying that he’ll save her and Seolla. The Fairlions defend the R-3 while Ryusei guards Mai. He tries to snap them out of their funk, but a group of Lions close in on them. Rai and Viletta arrive and take down the Lions. Mai wonders why they’d save her, and Rai says that they’re all a team now. Agilla laughs and attacks, saying that bonds formed with false memories are false as well. Aya asks why it matters, saying that at least the memories since she met her teammates are real. She adds she’ll move forward by her own will and tells Mai to decide on her own what she’ll do. Mai says she’ll go with Aya and tells Levi to shut up when she objects. Agilla attacks with a barrage, but everyone flies out unharmed. Viletta gives permission to form the SRX, and the R-1, R-2 and R-3 combine. Agilla fires two large balls at the SRX, but Ryusei destroys them with the Zine Knuckle attack. He hits the Sol Gravilion with a Blade Kick, but the damage repairs itself. It fires a Gravilion Arc and the SRX counters with the Gaun Genocider. The attacks collide and damage both units, but the Sol Gravilion repairs again. Rai says they need to hit it with enough damage so it can’t repair, which means using the Tronium Buster Cannon. Aya and Mai activate the T-Link Twin Contact and the R-Gun changes into Metal Genocider Mode. The Sol Gravilion draws its swords and charges, but the SRX blows it away with the Buster Cannon. Agilla escapes in a Guarlion and she withdraws with Ouka. The Hagane and Hiryu Kai arrive, and Tetsuya asks about Mai. Daitetsu says he’s sure the crew will accept her just like they did Lamia. He leaves Mai’s punishment for launching without permission to Tetsuya. Mai thanks Ryusei, who tells her to call him Ryu like her sister does. Viletta wonders if this was what Ingram wanted.

Commentary

The SRX team takes center stage here, with Mai running away after hearing the truth of things. Of course her being Levi wouldn’t have been much of an issue, since our heroes just love bringing old enemies into the fold. Though I’m sure such treatment would never be extended to a complete monster like Agilla. She delights in messing with the minds of Aya and Mai, revealing that their entire pasts are fake and that they’re just experimental subjects. This pisses Ryusei off and Aya eventually tells the old hag to shove it. Fake pasts or not, she and Mai are still the people they are now and there’s nothing wrong with that. Mai overcomes Levi and the SRX team is finally complete, which of course means it’s time for the glorious moment when the SRX is formed. I still marvel at how Katoki designed the thing to go together. While I prefer the OVA and Divine Wars version of the combination, the one here is still awesome and very Obari. Speaking of Obari, Agilla’s Sol Gravilion is a reference to the Sol Gravion from Gravion Zwei. The two sub pilots are even palette swaps of Toga and Eiji, the main characters of Gravion. They get dispatched by the SRX’s new BFG and Ryusei gets another cute girl crushing on him. Lucky bastard. Well, I just hope the SRX gets used more than once this time!
