Super Robot Wars

Super Robot Wars

Super Robot Wars (aka Super Robot Taisen in North America) is a video game franchise developed by Banpresto. The majority of the titles are strategy games that bring robots from various anime and manga together, the most notable being those from Gundam, Getter Robo and Mazinger Z. The first installment was released in 1991 for the Nintendo Game Boy. There are currently over 30 titles for various platforms with more in development. Beginning with Super Robot Wars II, Banpresto began adding characters and mechs of their own creation to the games. The first of these would be Masaki Andoh and his mech, Cybuster. Since then, the amount of Banpresto originals grew to the point where they received their own games without any licensed material. The games' popularity grew and in 1999 a TV anime series based on Cybuster was created. In 2005 and 2006, an OVA and TV series were created based on the Original Generation line of games. Because of licensing issues, most Super Robot Wars games are unavailable in North America and most likely never will be. The Cybuster anime and the Original Generation games have been released in the U.S. The OG OVA and TV series were released in the U.S. by Bandai Visual. The 2010 TV series Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector is an adaptation of the Original Generation 2 game.
