Episode 1: Friend or Foe

Review by Joel Jankiewicz

April 1, 2003

Summary

Aki Kisaragi talks about the Spidercrabs and how unless the Space Knights do something, Earth will be doomed. Noal of course jokes about it, and says that if the Earth is doomed, they should leave the Earth and become the new Adam and Eve. Aki takes some insult in that and shoves him aside, and while Noal makes a remark, Chief Freeman pops up on the com display. He makes a joke at Noal and tells both Noal and Aki to get more samples from the strange trees that appear to be part of the alien's invasion. Milly comes up on the screen and wishes them luck, before the screen goes off. Meanwhile, on the Dark side of the moon, at what looks like an outpost, a large Tekkaman known as Tekkaman-Omega is waiting for Tekkaman-Dagger to give his report. Omega is pleased by Dagger's report, but warns him of a Tekkaman called "Blade", who he says escaped the transformation and might still be loyal to Earth. Omega tells Dagger to leave, and Omega disappears. Back on Earth, Aki is in a mech-like robot and is gathering samples from the spore trees. She talks to Noal through the com and Noal says humans aren't that easy to give in. He looks up in the sky and wonders about the people in the Orbital Ring. At the same time on the Ring, explosions shake the ring, as a Tekkaman in red and white armor is destroying Spidercrabs. He gloats at how easy they are to destroy then takes a hit to his left shoulder after he's done with the crabs. He sees Dagger, and Dagger realizes that it's Blade he's facing. They start to fight one another and Dagger has an early advantage. But when Dagger avoids an attack he lands on an ion cannon satellite, only to be destroyed by one of Blade's spears. Dagger hits the Orbital Ring and then barely dodges a strike by Blade. Blade charges at Dagger, gloating at how the Radam will need to find another world to conquer, but a spidercrab breaks through the Orbital Ring hull and stabs Blade in the back with it's claws. Dagger takes advantage and jabs the spidercrab with his weapon, and shoves Blade off the Orbital Ring, causing Blade to fall to Earth. While falling, Blade tells himself that he has to live, or Earth is doomed. Meanwhile, Aki is still in the suit, when Noal picks up a falling object on his radar. The object impacts the ground a great distance from them, but the impact is huge, and sends heavy wind and small debris blowing at them. Noal asks if Aki is ok and she says she is fine. They go to investigate the impact area, only to find a huge crater. Noal thinks it's a ship, then Aki sees someone in the smoke. Noal pulls out his gun, and then they both go down the crater side to take a look. On the ground, they find a young man naked, bleeding in several areas. Aki and Noal don't know what to make of this.

The next day, at the Space Knight HQ, the young man is in bandages and has medical equipment monitoring him. Freeman, Aki, and Noal are watching Milly look after him, and Milly says he'll be ok. Noal goes into check with Tina and the young man starts to wake up. He panics and tosses his bed blanket over Noal and Milly, and pulls monitoring wires off of him. He grabs Milly and demands to know where he is and if the people around him serve Radam. Noal doesn't know what to make of it, and claims they are Space Knight's fighting for Earth. The young man isn't satisfied and wants more, but Freeman comes on the radio and tells the young man he is safe at the Space Knight HQ. Aki tells Milly to get away from the young man, and Milly elbows the man in the stomach, and runs to Noal. Noal asks for the man's name, and the man only says he only remembers being called "Blade" AKA D-Boy. Milly is shocked that D-Boy doesn't remember anything else, then alarms go off inside, signaling an attack of some kind at another base. The group arrives at a viewing monitor in a large room, and watches a recording of a base being destroyed. They watch in shock as both Spidercrab air and ground types attack the base and make easily destroy the defense force fighters and tanks. D-Boy demands to have a ship and Freeman tells him there are no more ships on Earth. D-Boy asks why but Freeman says that information is classified. D-Boy tells Freeman that he needs a ship to stop the Radam invasion by attacking the aliens in space. Freeman agrees with the logic to attack, but doesn't understand how D-Boy knows so much. Milly comes in and tells everyone out loud that a new ship is ready, not knowing D-Boy is looking for one. D-Boy runs up to her and shakes her, demanding to know where the ship is. His head bandages fall off and reveals a scar going down D-Boy’s left eye, starting from his eyebrow, passing his eye. Milly says Blue-Earth is in hanger 3, and D-Boy runs off, with Freeman sounding the alarm for an intruder alert to stop D-Boy. D-Boy runs down a hall, and breaks a door open with his shoulder and heads down a flight of stairs. Meanwhile, Aki and Noal are taking an elevator down to Blue-Earth, Aki convinced that D-Boy may be stealing since he thinks weapons may be aboard. Noal says it has nothing, and Aki says that D-Boy may not know it. At the lower levels, D-Boy is beating men trying to stop him. He shoves a crossed dressed person into the wall called Rebin (Note, female in dub, guy in sub) and demands to know where the ship is. Honda grabs D-Boy and bear hugs him, but Rebin tells him to go easy. D-Boy head butts Honda and knocks him out. D-Boy threatens Rebin again, demanding to know where the new ship is. Rebin tells him the directions to hanger 3, and D-Boy thanks Rebin and runs off heading down the halls. He breaks a lock panel, and hanger doors open to reveal a ship on a catapult launcher. D-Boy runs into the ship, grabbing a space knight male uniform while starting up the ship. Aki and Noal run aboard, and get inside just before D-Boy takes off. Aki and Noal hang on, as the catapult launches Blue-Earth into the sky and heads into space, heading for the Orbital Ring. D-Boy puts on his uniform, and then Noal grabs D-Boy by the uniform collar and asks what he's doing. Aki sees the Orbital Ring's Ion cannons take aim, and Noal turns on the ship’s shields while they dodge. D-Boy thanks them for the ride and heads to the back. Noal and Aki demand to know what's going on, and say D-Boy won't survive without a suit, but D-Boy says that they don’t understand. D-Boy heads to the back of the ship, and Noal tells Aki to cut the power there; hoping to keep him locked in. D-Boy enters the back of ship, and the power goes out. He pulls out his crystal and Tekk-Setters. Noal and Aki watch in awe as D-Boy manages to still get into space, and heads out into space in some kind of light, then D-Boy changes into Tekkaman-Blade. Aki and Noal are then shocked when a Spidercrab is about to attack them, but blows up instead. Tekkaman-Blade turns to look at the ship, joking at Noal about an earlier comment. Aki and Noal are in awe, as Tekkaman-Blade charges at the Orbital Ring, giving commands to his armor to go into battle mode.

Commentary

There you have it, episode 1, and like any first episode, good, but not the best. Since my source is from the English Australian dub. So far the voice cast seems to match well, and we're introduced to a good number of the main good guy cast already. Important to also note, Rebin is a male who dresses like a woman. In the Australian Dub, he is given a woman’s voice, just to clarify things up.
