Episode 17: The Visitor

Review by Joel Jankiewicz

October 25, 2003

Summary

Picking right where the last episode left off, Rebin, Honda, and Blade stare a single figure on the roof who just saved Rebin’s life. A large cannon folds down over the shoulder of the figure, then we get a clear view of who saved Rebin. It appears to a Tekkaman, but Honda nor Rebin can put their finger on it. Blade asks who the Tekkaman is, but then notices the right-shoulder cannon fold back down. Blade yells out he’s going to fire, but the new Tekkaman jumps off the roof when the section is standing on is destroyed by a spidercrab. The Tekkaman jumps into the air and opens fire on the spidercrabs with its shoulder cannon, and starts to destroy the spidercrabs one by one with relative ease. Rebin is convince that it’s a Tekkaman, and Blade says that it already destroyed half a dozen spidercrabs, while he just stood and watched. Noal and Aki don’t know what to make of this, then notice military ships flying overhead to the factory. The remaining spidercrabs have had enough, and dig into the ground and leave. Milly informs Freeman about this, but he just looks at the monitor, not a single bit of emotion about him. Blue Earth lands, and Aki and Noal meet Blade, Honda and Rebin on the ground. Noal asks if it really is a Tekkaman, but Aki is confused as she was told no more Tekkaman were on Blade’s side. Blade just stares at the new Tekkaman, and they don’t say a word to one another. Noal then gets a strange feeling, when he recognizes a ship belonging to colonel Bowguard who he knows. The military ships land, and one of them unloads a high-ranking officer and Marlo. They walk up to the new Tekkaman, and the officer calls him Balzak and shakes his hand, and congratulates him on a good demonstration. The Space Knights mention to one another about scientist working on Tekkaman armor, but this now confirmed. Marlo opens a panel nearby the armor’s cannon, and is pleased that there wasn’t any Z-Tron break down even with the rapid fire. Balzak’s voice can be heard, and says to Marlo that he’s too modest and that he made a great invention. Suddenly armor plates unfold, and Balzak is in a jump suit inside the armor. Everyone looks in shock, and Balzak greets them while he moves hands up like he’s holding a camera. He asks if they don’t recognize without it, and they do realize it’s him. Balzak jokes if Rebin now likes him without a beard, but Rebin says he should already know the answer. Aki demands to know what’s going on, and Noal says he always knew he was more than a reporter, but also asks him why he is in that ‘mechanical monster’. Balzak jumps out of the armor and takes his helmet off, and walks toward Blade. He points at Blade and says that he’s the only real monster here, and Blade looks at him with confusion. Balzak asks about what he thinks about Marlo’s “Sol Tekkaman” armor, and how he destroyed twenty spidercrabs by himself while Blade did nothing. He asks Blade what good a Tekkaman is if he goes nuts after thirty minutes, and tells to just deactivate himself so he doesn’t hurt people, and calls him a monster. Blade looks at Balzak with disbelief and is shocked, but Aki comes in and tells Balzak off, and tells Blade to ignore him. But Blade just walk towards Pegas, and Balzak laughs at him. Marlo taps his shoulder, and then he says that their dreams of fame fortune and power will now come true, having grown in the awful slum they once lived in. And he says that he’s even happier now that Blade’s now out of the picture. Milly overhears this and asks Freeman why Balzak would do this when he’s just a reporter. Freeman says that he was never a reporter, but one of Colbert’s spies to get the data on the Tekka-System. With that data, Marlo, Colbert’s top scientist has now developed the Sol Tekkaman armor, which is just as nearly power as Blade, even in weapons. The military then gets the power plant running, and starts to produce Z-Tron for the Sol Tekkaman. At the Space Knights HQ sometime later, Aki says that Milly told him that Freeman already knew Balzak was a spy. Honda says that he heard that Freeman tried to give false information to Balzak, but Noal says that it looked like it didn’t work, and adds he’d like to ring Balzak’s neck. Aki says that now with the Sol Tekkaman, Colbert can mass produce them by the thousands, and Rebin realizes that D-Boy wouldn’t be needed anymore. Aki tells D-Boy (While he’s lying on a bed with a book over his face) that no matter how many they make, that D-Boy is still the best, and Noal jokes about how they’re planning his future. Aki walks up to him and tells him to cheer up, but D-Boy gets off the bed and walks out the room and Aki worries about him. Meanwhile, at the power plant, Marlo, Balzak and Bowguard watch a monitor, and Marlo says that they should have enough Z-Tron for another test in an hour, then Colbert comes onto the com and asks for a report. Bowguard says things are on schedule, and Colbert says that he wants the plant running soon to begin mass production of the Sol Tekkaman armor. He tells Balzak that he saw the recording of his fight, and then promotes him to major, putting him in charge of training future Sol Tekkaman pilots, and promotes Marlo to head scientist of the laboratory. Colbert asks if they are any questions, with Balzak and Marlo says that he can count on them. Colbert tells them to keep up the good work and the communication ends. Marlo says he could now become head of the entire Space Science Agency, and Balzak nods and they both clasp their hands. Marlo asks Balzak to wake him up if he’s dreaming, but Balzak says that he isn’t dreaming, and that they’re just beginning.

The next day, D-Boy is back at the factory (Along with the Space Knights), but he’s alone in a garage with Pegas. He punches a wall in anger, and tells himself that he has to find a way through this and fight again. Nearby a hanger, a transport is getting ready to leave, and Marlo along with Bowguard, and he tells Marlo to guard the Z-Tron package (Built into a suit case box) with his life. Marlo gets in, and gives a thumbs up to Balzak, who returns it and watches a short distance along with the Space Knights. Just as the jet is about to take off, spidercrabs jump out of the ground and start attacking the base. Balzak sees them going after the plane, and he runs to get his suit. A spidercrab attack the jet Marlo is in, and kills one of the two pilots, spraying blood on Marlo’s face, while Bowguard pulls a pistol and starts shooting. The Space Knights also have pistols, but Honda says that they can’t do anything and need Tekkaman-Blade. Aki agrees, and runs off to find D-Boy. Bowguard finally bites the dust, and the spidercrab is about to go after Marlo, but he pulls the ejection seat and is shot away into the air. The parachute comes out, but a spidercrab flight type cuts the cords, and Marlo starts falling. His chair lands and he falls out, but he’s able to get up. He notices Balzak fly by in his Sol Tekkaman armor, and tries to get up to follow him. Aki runs around looking for D-Boy, then finds him in the garage. She tells him that spidercrabs are attacking the airfield and that he needs to help, but D-Boy just asks why they don’t call up Balzak and his miracle suit. Aki says that they don’t know what will happen if they trust him, and she he’s the only real Tekkaman, and he has the only crystal with such power. She walks up in front of him and begs him to change and waits of an answer while D-Boy thinks about it. D-Boy agrees that he’ll change, but he still thinks it’s a mistake. He activates Pegas and jumps inside the interlock chamber and changes into Tekkaman-Blade. Meanwhile, Balzak is still doing most of the fighting, destroying spidercrabs where he can. One comes out of the group behind him and almost ambushes him, but a lance comes through its head, and Balzak realizes that Blade’s here with him. Blade finishes the spidercrab and starts going to work with Balzak to clean up house. Milly and Freeman watch on the monitor, and Milly thinks Blade appears to fine again, and says she’ll count down his thirty minutes. Marlo is off some distance away, trying to reach Balzak, but then the spidercrabs take notice and start to surround him. Marlo calls out to Balzak, and Balzak tries to take aim. Aki tells him he can’t fire with Marlo in the way, or his package. Noal adds in that if he hits the Z-Tron pack, the base could go up. Balzak tries to think of something, and then Marlo tries to make a dash. Marlo yells not to worry about him and just protect the Z-Tron package, and he throws it. The package is clear, but a spidercrab comes up and impales Marlo through his back and out his stomach. Balzak watches in horror as Marlo falls over, and images of recent events flash in his head. He cries out Marlo’s name, and starts firing in rage, destroying every spidercrab in sight. Blade continues to fight, while Aki asks Honda how much time he has left. Honda says he isn’t sure, saying he’s just been out there for a while. Blade sees only one spidercrab left, but then his vision goes blurry and he sees Milly over the spidercrabs place. Blade panics, and the spidercrab hits Blade, knocking him down. He gets up, but then starts seeing multiple spidercrabs with all of the Space Knights on them. Blade tells himself that he’s only hallucinating but he can’t seem to stop, then his armor starts sparking as he realizes he’s losing control again. Aki and Noal watch, as Blade falls to his knees in pain. The spidercrab is about to attack him again, but it suddenly blows up and Balzak is standing where it used to be, just looking at Blade. The Space Knight’s can’t believe, and Aki is shocked that Balzak saved Blade. Balzak gets out of his suit and runs towards Marlo, and tries to pick him up and asks if he’s all right. Marlo opens his eyes and asks if the Z-Tron is safe, but Balzak says it is and to not worry about that. Marlo asks if they’ll still want him as the head of the Science Agency, and asks if they’ll still be rich and famous. Balzak says he doesn’t care about them, and Marlo asks why he doesn’t care about fame and fortune. Balzak says those things don’t matter without him, and Marlo smiles at Balzak one more time before he passes away. Balzak starts crying, and simply hugs Marlo even though there’s nothing he can do. All the Space Knights watch, and D-Boy comes up back to normal. Balzak puts Marlo’s body down, and turns to look at D-Boy. Balzak angrily says that it’s D-Boy’s fault that Marlo died, and says that how can he protect anyone if he loses control, and says he’s nothing but a monster again. Something in D-Boy’s mind snaps, and he grabs his head in shock and yells. He yells out loud that he’s not a monster but a man, and charges at Balzak. Balzak tells him to stop and pulls out a pistol, and pulls the trigger. Aki cries out D-Boy’s name, and Noal demands to know what Balzak did. Colbert gets word of what happened and says that Tekkaman-Blade is dangerous and is to be arrested on site. In a stretcher, D-Boy is lying in it with his arms in handcuffs. Aki demands to know what happened, and Balzak tries to calm her down and says he only used a tranquilizer. Honda grabs a military soldier by the collar of his uniform and says that he’ll have to take him first, but Balzak says he’s under orders from Colbert, and tells him to not interfere. The soldiers carry him away, and Noal can’t believe how D-Boy came so close to pulling it together, and Aki tells herself that she’s sorry. Milly at the Space Knights HQ over hears this and tries to tell Freeman, but he already knows, and tells Milly that he can’t do anything about it, and walks out of the control room. A prison cell door closes, and D-Boy sits in a cell, thinking about what happened. He tells himself that it’s not true, that he wouldn’t hurt anybody and that he isn’t a monster. He pauses, then wonders if he actually is a monster.

Commentary

Is it just me, or have things gotten from bad to worse now? In which I'm referring to what's happening with the situation and not the series. The Sol Tekkaman armor proves to be just as effective as Blade so far, and possibly better. But it despite the suit, Balzak wasn’t able to save Marlo in time, as that seems to be a trend for side characters, why is it that they have to die some horrible death? Now D-Boy is arrested as he went almost crazy yet again, and the Space Knights can’t do anything about it. Somehow I think this streak of luck of Balzak and his suit isn’t going to last, that’s a trend that seems to happen in any anime that tries to replace the hero. But we’re left with another cliffhanger, once again by the edge of our seats. Don’t you just sometimes hate it when that happens?
