Episode 30: Lady in Waiting

Review by Joel Jankiewicz

Summary

The Green Earth is moving through the forest of spore plants, when it comes across a large group of spidercrabs. Just before Noal and D-Boy head out, the spidercrabs burrow into the ground, and become early stages of spore plants. Noal is relieved, then notices a large castle off in the distance. He thinks they should spend the night there, but Aki isn’t sure and asks him if it’s a good idea, but Noal thinks it’ll be fine. The Green Earth arrives at the castle, which still hasn’t been engulfed by the spore plant forest. The gang gets out of Green Earth, and Rebin walks to the front door and yells to see if anyone is home. Noal calls Pegas up and orders it to open the door, but Aki orders Pegas to not do it. Pegas becomes confused, and while Aki and Noal debate, the door to the castle opens. An older robot by the name of Torg greets them, and invites them into the castle. As Torg leads the Space Knights (Pegas included), through the castle, the gang is shocked at how the castle is in such good condition. Torg leads them to the ballroom where the ‘mistress’ will greet them. Suddenly a girl around Milly’s age walks to them from the ball room stairs, and welcomes them to her home, and says her name is Gloria. Later while they are having tea, they find out that Gloria has been living in her home all alone with Torg. She says she has been waiting for her grandfather who hasn’t returned. The Space Knights think that he left to get help after the invasion started, and Noal asks her if she is worried about the spore plants surrounding her home. She says they seem harmless, but Noal tries to tell her otherwise. She doesn’t seem to be concerned, and says the Space Knights can rest at her home at their disposal. Just when Torg shows them to the rooms, Gloria asks Milly if she would like to try some dresses. Rebin teases her, but Milly agrees and goes with Gloria. As the Space Knights are shown their rooms, Torg leaves them to get used to their surroundings, and Rebin jokes about sleeping on the beds for years. D-Boy says that Gloria is oblivious to spore plants, and Noal agrees with him. He then asks about what possibly happened to Gloria’s grandfather, and D-Boy believes that her grandfather was killed. Meanwhile, Gloria is showing dresses to Milly, then picks one out for her. She then gets a necklace for her, saying it was from her grandmother, but Milly refuses. Gloria insists, as they have an opportunity to be ‘sisters’.

Later, dinner is being prepared, and Torg gives a bit of his history to Pegas, mentioning how he became a butler for the castle. In the dining room, the Space Knights, with the exception of Milly as she isn’t with them yet, agree that when they leave, that they’ll take Gloria with them. Suddenly Pegas comes into the room, holding a cloth over his right arm and pushing the food tray, calling himself a butler. Rebin can’t make heads or tails out of it, then Gloria comes in, with Milly right behind her in a red dress. The Space Knights are shocked at how beautiful she looks, and Rebin gets jealous. Pegas seats Milly in her chair, and just when Rebin is about to sit down, Pegas pulls the seat away from him, and Rebin falls down. The Space Knights laugh, and finally eat dinner. It’s now nighttime, and D-Boy and Aki are in their room. They enjoy the peace and quiet, but are both worried about convincing Gloria to join them. Milly is with Gloria, watching her play the piano. She asks Gloria if she would come with them, but Gloria insists that she wants to wait for her grandfather. Milly says that she’ll be alone again once they leave, and Milly says that her grandfather may not come back. Gloria suddenly stops playing, then changes the subject by asking Milly to stay with her. Meanwhile, Noal and Rebin are exploring the basement of the castle, then stumble upon double door room. Noal sees an electric lock on it, but Rebin says it’s already unlocked. The door opens, and Noal and Rebin look inside with surprise. Pegas is with D-Boy and Aki, then Pegas’s alarms start going off, indicating spidercrabs are approaching from all sides. Back in the cellar, Noal and Rebin walk into the unlocked room, which seems to be a make shift lab of some kind. Noal finds a picture of Gloria, Torg, and what looks like her grandfather. Noal looks at it, then looks at the back. It’s a happy birthday picture, but something isn’t right. He reads it carefully, then realizes the birth date is ten years old at least. Before Noal can tell Rebin what he found, the castle is under attack. Spidercrabs are attacking the castle, and then D-Boy takes Pegas out to become Tekkaman-Blade. Blade starts fending them off, and stops one spidercrab from getting too close to Milly and Gloria in the piano room. Milly begs Gloria to come with her, but Gloria insists that Milly should come with her to the underground shelter and stay with her. Aki starts banging on the main door, but Torg locks her out. Gloria starts dragging Milly with her with one hand, and for some reason Milly can’t break free. Blade is still fighting the spidercrabs, when Noal joins the fight in his Sol Tekkaman armor. The spidercrabs then burrow into the ground and turn into plants, and then the vines start to intertwine with the castle. Rebin gets in touch with Noal and Blade, and tells them that Aki and Milly haven’t returned. Noal says he can handle the fight, and Blade goes off to get Milly and Aki. Torg picks up Milly, then goes with Gloria to head to the shelter. Milly begs for Torg to let her go, but insists that he’s doing Gloria’s wish. Vines suddenly get into the piano room, and Torg covers both Gloria and Milly from falling debris. A rock smashing the lock on the main door and Aki gets in. Milly tries one more time to convince Gloria to go with them, but she still refuses. Torg suddenly grabs Gloria, and tells Milly to go with the Space Knights. Milly asks Torg to watch over Gloria, and he says it’s his duty. Milly and Aki make a run for it down a hall, but a vine blocks their path. Suddenly it gets cut in half, and Blade makes a path for them. Gloria can’t understand why Milly left her, and then Torg asks her if she would like to go with the Space Knights. Gloria says she wishes to stay in the castle and wait for her grandfather, then they both head for the underground shelter. Off in the distance, the Space Knights watch the castle finally crumble, and wonder if Gloria is all right. Noal looks at the picture he found one more time, and drops it in the water, praying that Gloria will find her grandfather one day.

Commentary

Another filler with little to do with the plot and we seem to run into another ‘kid of the episode’ again. Gloria seems to be average, but in a way she isn’t. Why she insists on waiting for her grandfather when the danger is very clear is beyond me. Maybe she isn’t as normal as she looks. This was a bit of a character development episode for Milly and even Pegas. However, as Milly finds out, one can live a dream, then it can suddenly shatter to pieces. The picture that Noal found is strange, as we don’t know exactly how long Gloria has been waiting for her grandfather. The date on it doesn’t make a lot of sense either. In any case, not much happened to the main plot, as this sadly just another filler, even with the character development.
