Episode 33: Axe Attack

Review by Joel Jankiewicz

September 6, 2004

Summary

Axe swings his weapon down, but Blade lifts his own to block Axe’s weapon. But Axe knocks it away, and takes another swing at him. Blade grabs the blade of the axe with both hands, and uses his leg to push Axe over him, and gets his weapon back. However, Blade finds more goo attaching to his legs, but gets free of it before Axe uses his weapon to use a beam attack on him. Blade dodges another attack, and goes back to attacking Axe. Aki, Rebin, and Milly don’t know what to do, and Rebin asks Balzak for help, but he’s still stuck in the goo, and Noal is still down. As Blade fights Axe, Axe tells Blade about the time he was his student, and Blade has a flashback. Blade remembers when he was in sparing practice with Shinya, with Goddado watching them. As the match continues, Shinya’s aggressive stance switches when Takaya (D-Boy) hits Shinya on his injured wrist. Goddado calls off the match and declares Takaya the winner. Shinya and Goddado are impressed, and they all share a joke with one another. Blade gets another flashback about his conversation with Goddado, telling him that he thought it was a dirty move to hit Shinya on his injured wrist. Goddado tells him not to worry about it, and tells him that Shinya wouldn’t appreciate if he knew his brother was holding back. Takaya accepts the gesture, and tells Goddado not to tell Shinya about the conversation, and Goddado promises him. Blade’s flashback ends, and he goes on fighting again. Off some distance away from the cathedral, Sargent Barnard and a group of his soldiers are looking for D-Boy and the Space Knights, but can’t seem to find them. Noal has finally woken up and starts blasting Balzak out of the goo that was holding him, but just as Balzak is nearly free, Noal gets stuck again. Balzak gets loose, and starts getting Noal free as well. Blade continues to fight Axe, but is starting to lose. Noal and Balzak interfere, but Axe uses his weapon to create an energy attack that knocks both Noal and Balzak’s suits out of commission. Blade tells Axe to leave them alone, and Axe orders the large plant he was talking to before, and orders it to seal him and Blade up. The ground starts collapsing and vines start to create a dome around Axe and Blade. Barnard and his men finally get an idea of where the Space Knights are, and start heading towards the cathedral. Blade and Axe start fighting again, and Axe asks Blade if he remembers when he made his promise to look after Shinya before they were abducted. Blade tells Axe that Shinya isn’t his brother anymore, but Axe tells him that while the names have changed, he is still his brother, and says he’ll protect Shinya.

In the tundra that is Alaska, the new Space Knights HQ is near completion, and Freeman is busy working on some data, when Honda comes in and gives him some coffee. However, Honda has work to do again, and leaves Freeman alone. Freeman looks over some data of Blade, and wants to find a way to make him better. Back at the cathedral inside the plant dome, Blade and Axe continue to fight. Axe gives Blade one last chance to join him, as he thinks it’s a waste to kill him. Blade refuses, and Axe says that he can’t win against Radam. Blade disagrees with Axe’s comment, and continues to fight him. The Space Knights continue to wait outside, and realize they need to get Blade out of there or his time limit will run out. Suddenly more goo comes out from the ground and almost covers them, but a blast from a freeze type gun freezes the goo and shatters it. Barnard and his men arrive, and the Space Knights fill him in about what’s happening. Barnard hands Aki his gun and they head out alone, as they plan to use the large cannon they have on their vehicle to find a weak spot in the dome. Blade continues to fight Axe, but he’s not doing too well. Axe starts using his weapon in a certain technique, and Blade throws his weapon at Axe, but his lance gets shattered. Outside the dome, Barnard has finally found a weak spot, and prepares the main gun on his vehicle. Blade tries to dash at Axe, but Axe’s weapon damages Blade’s right shoulder, ruining one of his Vol-Tekkers. Barnard opens fire, and Axe is distracted as the dome shacks. Blade jabs Axe in the right side of his ribs with his bladed fingers, and Axe is severely injured. Blade tells him to accept defeat, but Axe admires Blade on how good he has become. The plant that was controlling the vines of the dome finally dies off, and Barnard keeps using the main gun. Axe tells Blade he can’t allow him to get to the moon, and opens his own Vol-Tekkers even with his injury. He charges at Blade and holds him, and starts to overload his Vol-Tekkers. Barnard finally breaks through the wall of vines, and takes aim at Axe. The main gun fires, and hits Axe in the faceplate, revealing Axe’s (Goddado’s) face. Blade says farewell to him, and jabs him again near his Vol-Tekkers, nearly killing him. Axe smiles one last time at Blade, and manages to just barely fire his Vol-Tekkers, but they explode on him. Blade is knocked out of the dome, and Barnard and his team are lucky as well to survive the explosion. A couple of minutes later, the Space Knights wait by Pegas, as the chamber opens and D-Boy falls out, tired and worn out. They ask him if he got Axe’s crystal, and he tells them he couldn’t get it. Barnard walks up to D-Boy and tells him it’s good to see him again, and D-Boy is surprised to see him. Barnard offers him a drink, and tells him they got catching up to do. Back on the moon at the Radam base, Shinya is in a chair on what looks like the Argos, and contemplates Goddado’s death. He is shocked that D-Boy has killed him, and believes that it’ll be D-Boy’s turn to die shortly.

Commentary

An excellent fight, and now this ends the Axe Arc of Tekkaman Blade. D-Boy needed Axe’s crystal to get to the moon, and he couldn’t get it, as Goddado committed suicide with the Vol-Tekkers in an attempt to kill him. That’s strike one for D-Boy, so now he has to find another Tekkaman to get a crystal from, or another method to get to the moon. Barnard finally returns after a VERY LONG absence, but I’m surprised at his return as well. How Barnard and his men survived for so long beats me, but then again he and his men were some of the best. Now with the main Earth Military beat, he can probably stretch his abilities a lot better probably. Now we’ll have to see where the story goes from here.
