Based upon the 1970s Space Knight: Tekkaman, Space
Knight: Tekkaman Blade aired from 1992-1993 and ran for 49 episodes. Directed by Hiroshi Negishi, it became a hit
in Japan and was popular enough that it was released in the U.S. under the name Teknoman. The series was also dubbed in Australia, but
with some new additions and not as heavily edited as the U.S. release.
Teknoman aired on UPN in 1995, aimed at a younger audience.
However, after episode 27, the U.S. run was cancelled, while the Australian
dub proceeded to complete its full 43 episode run.
Tekkaman Blade takes place in the year 2292 A.D. Earth
has built a large Orbital Ring that connects to the planet, as humanity
spreads across space. However, Earth is under attack by an alien
race called the Radam. As they send alien like insects called Spidercrabs,
to destroy the Earth military and its defenses, soon even the Orbital
Ring is taken. Earth has one last hope, a young man who seems to
be related to the enemy, but is branded a traitor. His name is D-Boy,
but he is also called Tekkaman Blade. He joins the Space Knights,
as he fights a war to keep Earth, but also a personal one that involves
his whole family. The original series is available on DVD from Media Blasters, and Tekkaman Blase II was released on DVD by Urban Vision, but is now out of print.
