Initially, the RMI-13 Portman is developed as an experiment to test the viability of amphibious Knightmare Frames. However, the design proves itself many times, such as the destruction of the Japan Liberation Front and the battles to control the El Alamein front during the brief war between Britannia and the E.U. Thus Britannia decides to produce an improved model Portman, using the lessons learned from the original. The Portman II, as the new machine is designated, features a highly refined, streamlined silhouette to reduce water drag, as well as stronger propulsion. The torpedo launchers are moved from the shoulders to a separate tail unit, and the claw hands from the original are replaced with standard manipulators, allowing the Portman II to wield normal hand weapons. A team of Portman IIs, under the command of Knight of Seven Suzaku Kururugi, is used in an attempt to finally crush the cornered and weakened Black Knights, but Zero's sudden return and intervention destroys the entire assault fleet, including the Knightmares. Later, after Lelouch Lamperouge, aka Zero, seizes the Britannian throne, Portman IIs equipped with Float systems are used in the final battle against the air fortress Damocles.
