Even though the Order of the Black Knights is defeated during their attack on the Tokyo Settlement (later named "The Black Rebellion"), it is not destroyed. Several key members of the Knights evade Britannian capture and seek asylum in the Chinese Federation. Among them is head scientist and knightmare designer Rakshata Chawla, creator of Japan's first unique knightmares, the Type-02 Guren Mk-II and Type-3F Gekka. During the year that follows the Knights' collapse, Rakshata returns to her homeland of India and begins development of a new mass production model knightmare to replace the Type-10R Burai, itself little more than a slight modification to the already obsolete RPI-11 Glasgow. This new machine is named the Type-05 Akatsuki (Japanese for "dawn"), and draws heavily from the successful Gekka. Though its parameters are scaled back for mass production, the Akatsuki is still an excellent machine, and it sees its first action during the revived Black Knights' battles against the eunuch generals who rule the Chinese Federation.
