Owing to its large production run, ZAFT's mass production ZGMF-1017 GINN falls into the hands of many parties, including Serpent Tail mercenary Gai Murakumo. Gai heavily customizes a GINN to serve as his personal unit. Gai's unit is equipped with more thrusters than a standard GINN and thus requires two fuel pods to keep up his desired level of performance. The head crest has also been replaced with a secondary monoeye, giving Gai a clearer view of threats approaching from the rear. The custom GINN's armaments include a pair of "Armor Schneider" combat knives taken from Earth Alliance suits, a pair of flash bomb launchers and a "Cattus" recoilless rifle. In January C.E. 71, Gai's mission to destroy ZAFT supply bases is interrupted by an attack from ZAFT ace pilot Miguel Aiman. Gai's GINN is damaged in the battle, and he sacrifices it in order to complete his mission. Soon after, he discovers the MBF-P03 Gundam Astray Blue Frame in the remains of the destroyed space colony Heliopolis.
