Owing to its large production run, ZAFT's mass production ZGMF-1017 GINN falls into the hands of many parties, including the pirate Otark. His unit has been so heavily customized that it barely resembles the original GINN. The GINN's head and torso have been combined with a heavy tank body that features 16 missile launchers. Its arms have also been replaced with longer, skinnier arms that are equipped with heavy shields. In early C.E. 71, Otark and fellow pirate Elisa Azana attack Junk Guild mechanic Lowe Guele in the Debris Belt near Junius Seven in an attempt to steal the MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame. However, Lowe manages to outwit both pirates and defeat them.
