During the course of the One Year War, the Principality of Zeon conducts extensive research On Newtypes. But some fear the advent of the Newtype, including Zeon scientist Chlust Morses, who believes that Newtypes will eventually dominate Oldtypes. He puts all of his hatred of Newtypes into the EXAM combat system, along with the soul of Newtype Marion Welch. The EXAM system allows for incredible performance, but is extremely unstable. Since it's controlled by the tormented soul of Marion, it sometimes goes out of control and attacks allies, or refuse input from the pilot. After developing the EXAM system for use in the MS-08TX(EXAM) Efreet Custom, Morses defects to the Earth Federation and gave them the EXAM system. The Efreet Custom is one of several variations on the MS-08TX Efreet, but it has a few changes in armament. While the standard Efreet features several handheld weapons, the Efreet Custom is equipped with several weapons on its main body, including arm grenade launchers and leg missile pods. After the defection of Morses, the Efreet Custom is used by ace pilot Nimbus Schterzen. Nimbus uses the Efreet Custom in several battles against Federation Forces pilot Yu Kajima and his EXAM-equipped RX-79BD-1 GM Blue Destiny Unit 1. They later face each other on December 4 when the Federation Forces launch an attack to reclaim their captured California Base. Both the Efreet Custom and the Blue Destiny Unit 1 are destroyed in battle, but Nimbus and Yu survive and continue their EXAM-fueled rivalry.
