During the course of the One Year War, the Principality of Zeon conducts extensive research On Newtypes. But some fear the advent of the Newtype, including Zeon scientist Chlust Morses, who believes that Newtypes will eventually dominate Oldtypes. He puts all of his hatred of Newtypes into the EXAM combat system, along with the soul of Newtype Marion Welch. The EXAM system allows for incredible performance, but is extremely unstable. Since it's controlled by the tormented soul of Marion, it sometimes goes out of control and attacks allies, or refuse input from the pilot. After developing the EXAM system for use in the MS-08TX(EXAM) Efreet Custom, Morses defects to the Earth Federation and gave them the EXAM system. The Federation Forces use the EXAM in 3 units: the RX-79BD-1, RX-79BD-2 and RX-79BD-3. While all three units are based on the RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type, Unit 1 features a GM head instead of a standard Gundam head. Its armaments are also different from the Gundam Ground Type. Unit 1 is equipped with two head vulcan guns, as well as chest-mounted machine guns and missile launchers. It can also carry the same 100mm machine gun used by the Gundam Ground Type. Unit 1 is tested under the supervision of Alph Kamra, who selects Yu Kajima as the unit's test pilot, based on two encounters with the EXAM system. Using his RGM-79 GM, Yu successfully fights off Unit 1 when it goes out of control during a field test. Yu later uses his RGM-79D GM Cold Climate Type to fight Nimbus Schterzen's EXAM-equipped Efreet Custom. On December 4, the two EXAM-equipped units meet in combat during the Federation Forces' battle to recapture the California Base. Despite the loss of both machines, the EXAM-fueled rivalry between Yu and Nimbus continues.
