Technical and Historical Notes

The RGM-196 Freedom is a general purpose mobile suit developed for the Earth Federation Forces. Its basic design is similar to the long line of EFF mass production suits initiated by the RGM-79 GM. The Freedom’s body is covered with heavy armor, and its overall design represents a technological regression from earlier mobile suits. Its cockpit uses a multi-monitor layout similar to early mobile suits instead of the panoramic cockpit that was a standard feature for decades. Its main armaments include a machine gun, vulcan gun and a beam saber. While it is capable of equipping a beam shield, it often carries a solid shield. By the time of the fall of the Earth Federation in UC 0218, the aging Freedom is relegated to lighter duty in Side 8’s defense forces. In UC 0223, Side 8 deploys its 40 Freedom units to mount a defense against CONSENT, but the outdated mobile suits are no match for CONSENT’s new unmanned CAMW-13 MW-Rai.
