During its attempts to conquer the Earth, the first Neo Zeon movement anticipated that a full-scale invasion would be impossible. Therefore, several alternate plans were developed to subjugate the Earth Federation's leadership. Including an attempted capture of the Federation Senate and a colony drop, one plan was for a nuclear attack. To carry out this plan, Axis produced the tactical use mobile suit AMX-017 Gigantic. Some researchers suspect that the Gigantic's design borrows heavily from the RX-78GP02A Gundam "Physalis", but this has yet to be confirmed. What can be said is that the Gigantic did have many features in common with the Physalis. Its unique, mushroom-like body structure was reinforced for shock absorption and featured strong heat proofing. In order to facilitate its escape from the inevitable blast radius, the Gigantic featured powerful thrusters all over its body. Though at least one test unit was produced, a Neo Zeon attack to capture Luna II's atomic stockpile resulted in failure. Without the means to carry out its plan, the Gigantic's production was shelved.
