In its military buildup for the anticipated war against the Earth Federation, the Principality of Zeon's military was already hard at work developing an improved version of its first combat-capable mobile suit, the MS-05B Zaku. The first of Zeonic Company's new model Zaku II, the MS-06A First Mass Production Type (or "A-type"), was completed in August UC 0077 and saw the introduction of external power cables and other minor improvements over the old Zaku I. The director of the project, Kycilia Zabi, declared the A-type Zaku II insufficient, and more improvements were later to be made, leading to the mass-produced MS-06C Zaku II Type C (and later the well-known MS-06F model).
