In its pursuit of variants of its versatile MS-06 Zaku line to fill specific mission rolls during the One Year War, the Zeon military creates its first amphibious mobile suit, the MS-06M Zaku Marine Type. The basic body and form is based on a standard MS-06F Zaku II, except that its joints are equipped with waterproofed seals, and it mounts hydrojet engines and thrusters on its backpack, arms and legs. It also carries submarine-style weapons, including SUBROC (SUBmarine ROCket) guns and rocket pods for primary armament, and head-mounted vulcan guns for close-range defense. Five Zaku Marine Types are built and assigned to the Sea Serpent submarine squadron off the east coast of North America, but field testing signs the design off as a failure, as the waterproofed seals prove to be troublesome and its unstreamlined form severely limits its speed and maneuverability. Zeon soon begins developing all-new, mission-specific amphibious mobile suits afterwards, though the five Zaku Marine Types remain in service to serve as data-gathering units. Two more units are built, and these seven units are given the new model number MSM-01 and assigned to the Sea Serpent, Red Dolphin, Naga III, Green Siren and Mandalay submarine squadrons, where they serve until the end of the war, although only two or three units actually survive. After the war, some units are used as late as UC 0087 by the Earth Federation Forces' elite Titans task force. These MSM-01 units are renamed "Marine Hizack," after the mainstay mobile suit of the Titans force, the RMS-106 Hizack.
