The SP-W03 Mobile Pod is a unit built to assist in the construction of the space colonies. This simple unit consists of a main ball-shaped body and two manipulator hands for use in construction. When the One Year War erupts in January UC 0079, the Earth Federation is caught flatfooted by the Principality of Zeon's introduction of the mobile suit as a weapon of modern warfare. The Federation Forces are at work on their own mobile suits under the "Project V" banner, but none are combat ready at the war's outset. The Federation Forces use the Mobile Pod to resurrect the RX-76 project, and they eventually become the combat use RB-79 Ball, which is deployed as a stopgap measure until the rollout of the Federation's first mass production mobile suit, the RGM-79 GM.
