The Orb Union's weapons research leads to the creation of a new type of battleship: the Izumo class. This new battleship design also serves as the basis for the Earth Alliance's new battleship Archangel. While the Kusanagi is operated by the Athha family, the Izumo belongs to another of Orb's ruling families, the Sahakus. Because it is the inspiration for the Archangel class, much of its weaponry and internal design is the same. In C.E. 74, several Izumo class ships from Orb's space fleet launch from the lunar city Copernicus and join with the Three Ships Alliance near the end of the Second Earth/ZAFT War. Their goal: to seize control of Requeim, an Moon-based Alliance cannon that ZAFT has captured and intends to fire at the Orb mainland on Earth. During the battle, Requiem is destroyed by Athrun Zala's ZGMF-X19A ∞ Justice Gundam and Neo Roanoke's ORB-01 Akatsuki.
