Based on the Orb Union's Astray series mobile suits, the UT-1D Civilian Astray DSSD Custom is used by the Deep Space Survey & Development Organization. Although DSSD also uses civilian units such as the Junk Guild's MWF-JG71 Raysta, the Civilian Astray has been heavily customized for DSSD's needs. The head features an upgraded sensor suite, which is protected by a visor designed to stop impacts with space debris. The Civilian Astray's thrusters utilize an electromagnetic propulsion system that serves as a predecessor to the GSX-401FW Stargazer's "Voiture Lumiere." Although intended for a non-combat role, the Civilian Astray can carry a beam pistol and shield. Civilian Astrays are sent into battle in C.E. 74, when the Earth Alliance's secret Phantom Pain unit launches an attack on DSSD to seize the Stargazer.
