Technical and Historical Notes

The MS-05B Zaku I is the Principality of Zeon’s first mobile suit to see heavy mass production. A pre-war suit, the Zaku I is retired before the One Year War. However, due to losses, it continues to see limited combat throughout much of the war, mostly being used at isolated bases and by supply convoys. As the war progresses and the Zaku I begins to see combat more regularly, more of the old mobile suits begin to be put back into service. The land warfare Zaku I is little more than a stock Zaku I repainted in region-specific colors. Few of these suits see action, for while the Zaku II series is no longer being mass produced, it's not difficult to obtain one. Most Zaku Is are assigned to pilots that request them, or to newly-formed squadrons that are unable to obtain the best equipment available. Some see action in Southeast Asia, with at least one assigned to Topp. More are assigned to the Midnight Fenrir team. And while Manning and Swaggard eventually take on additional mobile suits, Manning keeps his Zaku I throughout the remainder of the war, adding different weapons and option parts to suit his liking. These include a shield, the MS-07B Gouf’s heat sword, and even a shield salvaged from a fallen RGM-79 GM.
