Technical and Historical Notes

 

The Type-R13EX Phantom is an experimental labor developed in secret by section chief Kurosaki for Schaft Enterprises Japan. The advanced (and presumably unmanned) Phantom is the first known labor to use laser weaponry. In addition to its powerful laser cannon, the Phantom is also equipped with an ECM jamming pod to disrupt communications. The Phantom makes its combat debut in Christmas 1998 when it attacks Tokyo Teleport. SV2 Division 1 is initially sent to respond to the attack, but its outdated MPL-97S Pythons are no match for the Phantom or its backup force of Type-7B2/B Brockens. It then falls to Division 2 and its AV-98 Ingrams to deal with the Phantom. The apparent explosion of the Phantom serves as a ruse to cover its escape. Several months later, the Phantom attacks a JSDF labor training ground in Oshima to lure out Division 2 and gather more combat data from the Ingram. After the Phantom is destroyed for good, Kurosaki joins the development team of the equally secret Type J-9 Griffon, which also menaces Division 2 on multiple occasions.
