Mailbag 26: Der Bigen Slicen

What's with German names for Gundam weapons? Doesn't everyone love Der Bigen Slicen and Der Zeitgeister Apoklyptica?

solid snake asks:
What's up with the fact that almost every weapon in SEED and DESTINY has a German name?

Chris responds:
Well, there are of course two answers to this. In the real world, foreign names/symbols are cool. In the U.S., it's quite common to see people put Japanese characters on cars, or get tattoos with vaguely Asian symbols. In the world of the Cosmic Era, there are naming standards for everything. The Earth Alliance names its ships after historical military commanders or mythological figures, and weapons have German names. ZAFT names ships after scientists, philosophers and even volcanoes, while their weapons have Latin names. There are real-world counterparts to this. The U.S. military names attack helicopters after Indian tribes, and many Navy ships are named after states or politicians. Having German names for an organization that is centered around the U.S./Western Europe is within reason.

Cyberdyne2008 asks:
Why is it that I-Field barriers have only been equipped on UC mobile armors and suits? It would seem to make more sense to equip them on the slow, defenseless ships. I would think that a Musai or better a Magellan class would have the generator output to power it. Not even after the OWY when beam weapons are the standard do they have them (the beam shield on the Reinforce Junior being the only exception).

Chris responds:
You'd think it would make sense to put I-fields on ships, but there are probably several reasons why they aren't. For one, I-field generators have high power requirements. Mobile armors like the Big Zam, Neue Ziel and Dendrobium can devote power to I-fields because they're mobile weapons designed for attack and defense. Ships, on the other hand, have many power requirements, like life support for the entire crew. Also, for ships, I-fields probably wouldn't be effective in a long battle. I-fields are still vulnerable to projectile weapons, so a round from a Zaku bazooka will still cause damage, I-field or no. Also, if a mobile suit gets within close range, it can still use a beam saber, heat hawk or whatever to damage the ship.

Kira_Lee asks:
1. This was never explained in Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory, but at the end, just before the rise of the Titans, what do you think the whole conspiracy within the Federation was that would later set the events of Zeta Gundam? All I know (or think it is, at least) is possibly that information of the Gundam Development Project was leaked intentionally...What do you think?

2. For Gundam SEED C.E. 73 STARGAZER, there are new remodeled versions of Strike, Duel and Buster Gundams by Phantom Pain platoon, how come there isn't a remodeled version of either Blitz or Aegis Gundams?

3. How does Phase Shift armour actually work, in stopping both physical attacks and conventional weapons such as machine guns, bazookas and heavy swords?

4. How does Akatsuki's beam reflection armor work?

Chris responds:
1. The conspiracy at the end of Gundam 0083 was basically a group of generals (including Jamitov Hymem) using a terrorist attack for their political benefit. Because of the attack on Solomon and the colony drop, they had an excuse to say: "we need special powers to route out insurgents." And thus we have the Titans, who in Zeta Gundam achieve a major political victory when the entire Earth Federation Forces are placed under their command. As to the Gundam Development Project, I don't think that the information was intentionally leaked. Given that the Delaz Fleet had Orville working as a spy for Anaheim Electronics, there'd be no need for the Federation to leak anything. Also, since Anaheim likes to play both sides of a conflict against each other, they may have slipped some info themselves.

2. If you want to see a remodeled version of the Blitz Gundam, you just have to look at the N Dagger N. I think the reason we have the Strike Noir, Verde Buster and Blu Duel is that their predecessors were general purpose units which were suitable for many combat situations. The Blitz Gundam was a specialized sneak attack unit, and the Aegis Gundam was frankly useless. This is why you see Strike Daggers, Duel Daggers, Buster Daggers and N Dagger Ns, but no Aegis Dagger or other variant.

3. It's not really explained in much detail, as is the case with many Cosmic Era technologies. Most likely, the PS armor absorbs and dissipates the energy from conventional weapon attacks.

4. In general, Cosmic Era technology is pretty vaguely explained, but the Akatsuki specifically is a mystery.
