Mailbag 29: Gandam Faighto
Posted September 21, 2006
What ever happened with the 14th Gundam Fight? Is the Strike Noir a Gundam, or is it just an emo wannabe? Read on for the answers.
solid snake asks:
Why aren't there more Alternate Universe sequels? With the exception of Endless Waltz and DESTINY, there aren't any sequels. G Gundam even left the door wide open for a sequel with the last screen saying "See you next time, Gundam Fight 14." What gives? |
Chris responds:
I never took that screen at the end of G Gundam as anything other than a joke. Indeed, in a recent interview posted at Gunota Headlines, Yasuhiro Imagawa explained it with the following statement: "
For example, with the Gundam Fight, it was done in jest. I wanted to capture the Olympic spirit."
Having seen several of Imagawa's series and meeting him in person, I can back up that statement as just the kind of thing he would do. As far as G Gundam is concerned, what more could you do with it? The original concept for the series before Imagawa came aboard was just the Gundam Fight. He created the Devil Gundam storyline, which is the heart of the series and makes it stand out. A series about the 14th Gundam Fight would be just that: the tournament. It'd be no different from the plethora of tournament-style anime out there now. With Wing, you can't do much more because the universe was essentially wrapped up with Endless Waltz. Turn A was clearly not a big moneymaker for Bandai, so don't expect to see more there. And since Gundam X was canceled, the same applies there. What needs to be kept in mind here is that as time goes by, interest in some of these shows declines. At this point, it's been 12 years since G, 10 years since X and seven years since Turn A. Although there may not be anime sequels to some of these AUs, there are manga sequels for X and Turn A, which keeps those universes alive.

Dr. G asks:
I have been steadily collecting Gundam merchandise ever since Wing got started. Last year I started purchasing the DVDs, but last month I got F91 and the 0083 box set, which completes my UC collection (the only one I'm truly interested in getting). Are there any new plans to release other UC Gundam series like V or ZZ? Also is DESTINY still being released because I got volume one a while ago and I can't find the second DVD anywhere. Thanks.
|
Chris responds:
Right now, the only Gundam series on tap for the U.S. market is DESTINY. As I've mentioned in this column before, Gundam isn't doing as well here as it was in 2000. It may take a long time to see the other series on DVD, and it's always possible they might never come out. It was said during the convention season that Bandai was negotiating for the Zeta movies, but nothing else has been heard since then. Also, DESTINY is still being released. Try stores like Best Buy or check the Internet.

Joe Mack asks:
I have a question about an answer from the last Mailbag. In the answer you were debating the validity of calling the Akatsuki a Gundam. And while I agree with your comment on it, you mentioned the Strike Noir and it had the implication that it was not a true "Gundam" in C.E. terms. My question is would it not be a true "Gundam" and just be a Strike copy with a new Striker Pack? Thank you very much for your time.
|
Chris responds:
Technically speaking, there's no such thing as a "Gundam" in the Cosmic Era universe because the name is only used sparingly by a handful of people. In universe, the Gundams are known only as Strike, Freedom, Impulse, etc. Of course, Bandai refers to them as Gundams on its website, reference books and model kits. In the end, whether or not the Strike Noir is a Strike Gundam copy or a Gundam itself doesn't really matter.

Admiral Amuro Ray asks:
I've come to notice that Bandai can't make up it's mind when it comes to allowing whom to dub which Gundam anime. For example, The Ocean Group dubbed Gundam Wing, Endless Waltz, MSG, the MSG games and CCA. But in the nineties they had a bunch of non-union LA actors record for 08th MS Team, the MSG movies, 0080 and 0083. And they let Blue Water dub G Gundam and Zeta. And then most recently Ocean was given the SEED series' and then LA got F91 to dub. What's up with that? |
Chris responds:
English anime dubbing is pretty complicated. Some studios use internal dub studios, such as ADV Films and FUNimation Entertainment. Bandai farms out their work to several dub studios, namely Animaze/ZRO Limit, Ocean Group and Blue Water. The 'non-union LA actors' you referred to are all employed by Animaze (also, The 08th MS Team was dubbed in 2001, not the 90's). Because Ocean Group and Blue Water are located in Canada, they're cheaper to use than Animaze. If you look at nearly every Bandai release, Ocean/Blue Water dub 50+ episode series, while Animaze handles movies and series up to 26 episodes (Eureka Seven being the exception here). As far as Zeta is concerned, there was reportedly some labor/union issue at the time in Canada, which led to the use of Blue Water instead of Ocean Group.
