Mailbag 46: Planetes: The Shadow Chronicles
Posted April 5, 2007
If the mere mention of G-Saviour frightens you, run away while you can.
Blue 55 asks:
1. Will there be a review for Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles and likewise an update in the Robotech mech section?
2. How many years does the anime Planetes span? Dose it go beyond 2075 or does the entire anime take place in a year's time?
|
Chris responds:
1. No, there will not be a review for Shadow Chronicles because we don't have a Robotech section and never will. It's not that I hate Robotech or anything, but here we only cover the original Japanese programs. Even though Shadow Chronicles is an original production, since we never covered the old Robotech, there's no point in covering its sequels. Also, we don't have a "Robotech mech section" because we have Macross and Mospeada. Even though Shadow Chronicles uses Mospeada mecha, we won't be adding any Robotech listings.
2. I only ever saw the first few episodes of the Planetes anime, so I honestly can't say for sure. But since much of its plot revolves around Hachi preparing for the launch of the Von Braun, it's got to be at least a year or close to it.

solid snake asks:
In a recent Mailbag you mentioned that you wrote 10 articles for Anime Insider and that two of them were published. What were the other eight about?
|
Chris responds:
I specifically said "several" so I'm not sure where you got 10 from. Several means three, and all of them were about Gundam.

Eternal Fantasy asks:
Reading about G Gundam, it came to me that it was a 1994 production, and Wing Gundam was in there as a cameo. But Gundam Wing was a 1995 production, and it was in the TV series design. I remember reading on the net somewhere that the original MS design for the Gundams were supposed to be Endless Waltz version, but changed to TV version due to the fact of complexity in drawing. So my question is:
1. Was the appearance of Wing as a cameo a foreshadow of a new Gundam series at that time?
2. Was Endless Waltz designs that was said to be originally used for TV version a fake since it seems that they have decided to use the TV series design at first?
|
Chris responds:
You have to remember that G Gundam ran from 1994-95. The first episode of Gundam Wing aired a week after the last episode of G Gundam. By then, Gundam Wing was well into production, so the crew from G could easily throw in the Wing Gundam as a cameo. What you read about the Endless Waltz designs is a complete lie. The designs you see in the TV series were always meant to be that way when the series was produced. However, the Endless Waltz designs retroactively supercede the TV versions and are considered the official canon designs. Any talk about design changes due to complexity of animation is a fabrication.

Jerald O asks:
1. Is it just me or does the GINN look alot like the Bugu from G-Saviour?
2.
Do you think there will ever be a sequel to STARGAZER?
3.
Does any mobile suit in the C.E universe have a 360 cockpit, or is that strictly a UC technology?
|
Chris responds:
1. They're similar in the sense that they're both generic monoeye antagonist suits designed by Kunio Okawara. Since many of his designs are so similar, it's no surprise that many look the same.
2. Probably not. I think STARGAZER was an experiment in creating a shorter OVA and broadcasting Gundam via the Internet on the Bandai Channel. Since STARGAZER also had a short manga adaptation and had a crossover with DELTA ASTRAY, that's probably all you're going to see of those characters. Of course, it's always possible that Sven or someone else could have a cameo in a future ASTRAY manga, but I think that would be about it.
3. No suit so far in the C.E. universe has a 360 degree cockpit. Outside of C.E., Wing Zero's cockpit is similar to a 360 degree type, but not quite the same. Also, the Turn A Gundam's cockpit is sort of panoramic, but it also has a VR helmet. It's not that it's strictly a UC technology, it's just that I think the crews on various AU series haven't decided to use them. Up until recently, beam shields were only in UC, but now they're in C.E. If they decide to use these cockpits in SEED, there's nothing stopping them from doing so. |
