Mailbag 49: Mu Geass: Takehito of the Voice Acting
Posted May 24, 2007
Another week of Mailbag entries, this time with 100% more Code Geass.
Ravage84 asks:
Recently I started watching Gundam SEED DESTINY and had a question about the Gundam SEED franchise that I hope you can give me a hand with. My question is: What is the fascination with the La Flaga family in SEED and SEED DESTINY? Throughout the two series there have been two clones of Al La Flaga (Rau and Rey), Mu was presumably killed at the end of SEED but is then brought back as Neo during DESTINY and then regains his memories and becomes Mu again.
|
Chris responds:
There's no clear answer why there's so many Flaga types running around in the SEED world, but there is something that might give an indication. In an interview, Mitsuo Fukuda said he brought Andy Waltfeld back to life because the liked the voice actor and because there weren't enough cool adults on the show. In Japan, Mu is voiced by Takehito Koyasu, who is probably the most prolific anime voice actor ever. He's appeared in hundreds of anime series, as well as games for Gundam and Super Robot Wars. Koyasu's voice is instantly recognizable, and he appears in lots of high profile series. Similarly, Rau and Rey are both voiced by Toshihiko Seki, another prolific and well-known voice actor. It's possible we see these characters show up because Fukuda wanted to feature these actors somehow.

Toxicity asks:
I was reading your Gundam X reviews, and it is mentioned that Witz's brother died of the "colony disease." What exactly is the colony disease?
|
Chris responds:
It's never explicitly explained what the colony disease is. In any catastrophic event like a war, there's going to be an outbreak of disease. And given the environmental damage and nuclear winter caused by the colony drop, it's no surprise that a new disease would pop up and be named the "colony disease."

ultima_god asks:
I heard about Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion in Anime Insider and started watching episodes over the Internet. According to the official site and Wiki they say there are games and DVDs of it in Japan and there are more seasons coming. My question is, will Code Geass ever come to North America (Canada and U.S.)?
|
Chris responds:
While a sequel has been announced for Code Geass, it's not clear yet what format it will be. As for a North American release, given the show's popularity in Japan and the high profile involvement of CLAMP on the character designs, I think it's a question of when, not if. I think the show pretty much has 'license' written all over it.

Destroy Gundam asks:
1. Would the Phoenix Gundam's nano-skin repair lost limbs or is it limited to repairing damage that is more minor in scale?
2. Was anything ever revealed as to how bits from the Bertigo and Gundam Rose can fly in the atmosphere? |
Chris responds:
1. I've never played any of the G Generation games, so I can't be of much help with this question. Sorry.
2. No, it's never really explained. For the most part, the AU series don't get into too much technical detail about what mobile suits can do - a notable exception is Endless Waltz, which replaced Wing's stupid points system with traditional UC-type specs on reactors, thrusters, etc. There's not much detail on Gundam X technology, and there's certainly even less for G Gundam. In fact, given the unique super robot nature of G Gundam, I don't even question how or why anything works, I just accept that it does. |
