Mailbag 73: The Jenius Harem

Posted June 17, 2008

This week, the Mailbag takes on a Macross-heavy slant, so if that's your thing, read on for more.

Luqman Hamaki asks:
I realized that Max and Milia have 8 daughters.

1. Since we know what happened to Emilia and Mylene, what happened to the other six?

2. Why did Emilia Jenius end up being at an ice planet?

Chris responds:
1. Before starting, I should clarify that Max and Milia have seven biological daughters and one adopted daughter. Their first daughter, Komilia, is the one who was born during the original Macross series and was used during the operation to capture the Zentradi factory satellite. I don't have to say anything about Mylene or Emilia since their appearances in Macross 7 speak for themselves. Moaramia Jifon, later adopted Moaramia Fallyna Jenius, appears in the Sega Dreamcast game Macross M3. As for what happens to Komilia and the other five biological daughters, we don't really know anything about them.

2. I haven't seen The Galaxy's Calling Me in about eight years, but I don't recall there being a specific reason why she ended up on that ice planet, other than she was practicing her singing since she had been inspired by Minmay.

Lucas Pina asks:
Just like the planning for the original/intended ending of Mobile Suit Gundam (eps 39~49, I guess) was published in a book afterwards, is there such a thing for Gundam X or any mention of which direction they were going for before the show was cut down to 39 episodes?

Chris responds:
Sorry, there's no such equivalent information for Gundam X, at least that has ever been publicly released. The only hit we have at what would have been is a sketch for a Gundam-like mobile suit for Ennil El called Esperanza II, which I believe was designed by Junya Ishigaki. Other than that, there's no information available, but I expect they would have spent more time with their space arc and had the Eighth Space War last longer than just a few episodes.

Josh Gelo asks:
1. When exactly did the Zentradi grow pointed ears? I don't recall any having the pointy ears in the SDF Macross series or in Macross Plus. Kind of makes it hard to believe a Zentradi could sneak aboard the original SDF Macross with those very pointy ears.

2. What exactly happens to the animation quality in Macross II? About midway through the series, the overall quality seems to change, going from greater detail to less detail. Did the production team change or did funding run out?

3. I was watching Macross Plus and started to wonder about the glowing fists the YF-19 and YF-21 use against each other. Are these miniaturized pinpoint
barriers or something just added to enhance the drama of the final conflict between Guld and Isamu?

4. Can the humans of the Macross universe be made to grow to Zentradi size? I'm not sure how this would be beneficial in any way besides meeting with them eye-to-eye considering how much weaker humans are physically to the Zentradi.

5. Would you say that Macross is a racier series versus a series like Gundam? I found myself wondering this during a recent episode of Frontier where Sheryl and Alto are hiding in the locker with Alto's phone ringing on vibrate in a rather sensitive spot against Sheryl. I guess my lack of Gundam series knowledge doesn't help the assumption/guess but walking up on someone nude isn't quite on the same level of the phone or the other 'fan service-esque' moments I've seen in Macross.

6. To switch gears a bit out of Macross, what would you say are the defining mecha series of the last half century that any mecha fan should probably
check out if nothing else but to educate themselves better on the genre at large?

7. I recently watched all my Macross Frontier episodes with their subtitles on YouTube. Do you find this to be beneficial to the fan of a series that cannot watch or understand said series because of location/language barriers or a hindrance to the potential for these shows to make their way to other
countries?

Chris responds:
1. Pointed ears have been a defining trait of the Zentradi ever since Do You Remember Love? and have been used in every production since then. It's even in Macross Plus - if you look closely, you can see that Guld has pointed ears while the human characters have rounded ones. As for how the Zentradi spies would deal with that, it's not very complicated. I doubt most people would even notice the pointed ears, and they can be easily disguised. Just look at the original Star Trek series - there are many occasion where Spock disguises his pointed ears by just wearing a cap or some kind of hat. A wig with long hair could also just as easily disguise the ears.

2. According to what I've read, Macross II was nearly canceled after the release of the fourth episode, but it was saved by interest from America, as it was being released almost simultaneously by the now-defunct US Renditions. If that's true, the series may have gotten a reprieve, but it most likely suffered budget cuts as a result of poor sales.

3. The glowing fists are exactly pinpoint barriers, so it's basically just a Valkyrie version of the Macross doing its signature Daedalus Attack.

4. Yes, humans can be macronized to Zentradi size. In DYRL?, Max gets macronized to Meltrandi size and uses a blue Queadluun-Rau during the final battle. In Macross Dynamite 7, Graham Hoyly, a Zolan, gets macronized to Zentradi size so that he can hunt space whales. As for resilience, keep in mind that not all Zentradi are of the same toughness. I'm sure that if a human got macronized up to 50 feet, they could probably take about the same level of punishment as a typical Zentradi (excluding special commander types like Vrlitwhai who can breathe in space).

5. It's kind of hard to compare the franchises as a whole since Gundam is so much bigger in terms of produced series. In looking at Macross, practically every series has featured nudity or some kind of fan service. You mentioned the good vibrations example from Frontier, but anyone who has seen Macross Dynamite 7 can certainly recall the rather bizarre scene where some adult woman tries to rape Mylene. That's pretty out there for a mecha show, or for any regular, non-hentai anime. By the same token, Gundam has had its own issues, as the scene where Kira has sex with Flay was pretty controversial in Japan, even though you technically don't see anything and the actual sex isn't shown. I'd also note, though, that Gundam has always had fanservice too, and although it's usually been to a lesser degree than Macross, that has changed recently. SEED took every opportunity it could to show Murrue's breasts bouncing during battles, and just about every female character in Gundam 00 has big breasts. If we look at the fanservice we've seen so far in 00 and Frontier, I'd say they're about the same.

6. As far as real robot shows go, I would definitely say the original Gundam and Macross series, since by almost anyone's definition they're genre-defining. On the super robot side, there's also obvious classics like Mazinger Z and Getter Robo.

7. Watching fansubs on YouTube isn't really any different from watching downloaded files, as it's just another outlet to watch the same product. As such, it still falls into that gray legal area that fansubs occupy. However, one notable difference is that fansubbed anime on YouTube is as easy target for removal, as copyright holders regularly sweep YouTube and send DMCA notices to Google regarding fansubs, AMVs and even game videos.

Charles Graul asks:
Hey, I had a quick question about how the Titans and the Federation get along in Zeta Gundam. It seems like in the beginning of the show, the Titans are the real elite snobs of the bunch, and dislike the regulars. But as the show progresses they seem to grow even more bold, and begin to recruit more regular Federation soldiers.

So here is my question after an endless set-up- If you lived in that universe, would you rather be a Titan MS pilot or a Feddie MS pilot?

Chris responds:
Well, this one is certainly a bit odd. But hey, let's run with it. If I lived in the Universal Century but knew what I know now about the Titans, there's no way I'd be on their side. Simple as that.
