86 -Eighty Six- (anime)

86 -Eighty Six- is a TV series that aired in Japan and streamed internationally in 2021-2022. It is an adaptation of the light novel series of the same name written by Asato Asato and illustrated by Shirabii. The anime’s staff includes director Toshimasa Ishii, writers Chiaki Nagai, Kurasumi Sunayama and Toshiya Ono, mechanical designer I-IV, character designers Tetsuya Kawakami and Mio Inoguchi and musical composers Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto. The series is initially set in the Republic of San Magnolia in 2148 as the country fights off invasion from the Legion, drone forces sent by the neighboring Empire of Giad. In reaction to this, the San Magnolian government segregated its population; those with silver hair and eyes, the Alba, are able to live in a walled off region with relative safety. Everyone else, referred to as the Eighty Six, are exiled to outside the walls and forced to battle on the front lines against the Legion. The story primarily focuses on two protagonists, Vladilena Milize, an Alba major and Shinei Nouzen, an Eighty Six and leader of the Spearhead squadron. The series has streamed internationally on Crunchyroll and will be released on home video in North America in 2024 by VIZ Media.
