Following the defeat of the Principality of Zeon at the end of the One Year War in UC 0080, remnants of the Zeon military fled into exile to rebuild and renew their war against the Earth Federation at a later time. One of these remnant groups was the Axis Zeon, who hailed from the asteroid base of the same name. The Axis forces rebuilt their military with the materials they had on hand, using the construction mobile suits AMX-001 Gaza-A and AMX-002 Gaza-B to produce their first mass production combat mobile suit, the transformable AMX-003 Gaza-C (originally designated MMT-1). Despite the fact that it was a transformable mobile suit, the Gaza-C featured simplified transformation systems, making it cheap and easy to manufacture. Over 100 Gaza-C units were produced and deployed when the Axis forces entered the Gryps War in late UC 0087. At the start of the First Neo Zeon War in UC 0088, the Gaza-C was replaced by several more advanced successors, including the AMX-006 Gaza-D, AMX-007 Gaza-E and AMX-008 Ga-Zowmn. By UC 0096, the original Gaza-C was still in service with the “Sleeves” Neo Zeon faction during the Laplace Incident.
