Aim for the Top!
In 1988, Gainax released the 6 part OVA titled Aim for the Top! Gunbuster. Marking the directorial debut of Hideaki Anno (Evangelion), Gunbuster tells the story of Noriko Takaya. As a space pilot in training, Noriko must overcome many obstacles and help save the Earth from creatures known only as the Space Monsters. Between 2004 and 2006, Gainiax released another 6 episode OVA called Aim for the Top! 2: Diebuster, directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (FLCL). A direct sequel to Gunbuster, Diebuster tells the story of Nono, a gynoid whose goal is to become a space pilot in the continuing war against the Space Monsters. In late 2006, the two OVAs were made into a compilation movie. Gunbuster was licensed and released in North America by US Renditions and later Manga Entertainment on VHS. In 2007, Bandai Visual USA released Gunbuster and Diebuster (under the title Gunbuster 2), along with the compilation movie on DVD (and later Blu-ray). Both series went out of print after BV USA ceased operations. In 2013, Discotek Media re-licensed Diebuster for a DVD release.
