Summary

At the Kogane Bank in Nouvelle Tokyo City a bomb goes off as a gang of robbers in their robots rob the bank of its money. The police arrive but they and their Government Dog robots prove to be no match for the robbers' robots. Meanwhile, Maito Senpuhji and Gaine learn of the robbery in progress and Maito's train turns into a plane as he goes on ahead. After the robbers have destroyed all the Government Dogs, Nouvelle Tokyo City's number one policeman Syouichirou Ozawa demands that the robbers stop, but he is shot at and proves to be no use. At that time Might Wing piloted by Maito appears and starts his attack against the robbers shortly followed by Gaine who transforms from train to robot. Syouichirou sees that the robot is talking and wonders if that is the reputed Might Gaine with the advanced AI supercomputer brain. The first of the robbers' robots Silverlet attacks Gaine but is held back and then defeated with a punch. The other two robots attack Gaine as he jumps in the air and shoots and destroys the mace of one of the robots with Gaine Shot. Maito tells Gaine that the money is in the back of the robots so he destroys the robots with Gaine Shot. The robbers try to run, but Might Wing stops them with a pair of giant handcuffs and then leave the scene. Might Wing returns to base and Maito learns he got a call from Hamada from his secretary Izumi. Maito tells Izumi his new slogan "Now, the nice guy who brings a hurricane, Senpuji Maito." Later on Maito tells his butler Aoki that he plans to have dinner with Hamada since the robbery stopped him from meeting him at the museum. In another area of the city the mad scientist Wolfgang has just completed the strongest robot in the world Ether 5656, and because he needs electricity he orders an attack of the Mabuyoshi Power Plant to steal the electricity. That evening Maito and Hamada have dinner in which Maito prepared all his favorites. Maito comments on how beautiful night is in Nouvelle Tokyo City, and Aoki talks about how fifty years ago the oil suddenly ran out and Tokyo fell into ruin. Ether 5656 and Wolfgang then start their attack on the Mabuyoshi Power Plant to steal its electricity.

Aoki says no one could imagine evil in the city and Might vows to preserve the peace. Aoki says they would have been proud and Hamada says it's been three years since they died in that mysterious accident. A blackout suddenly strikes as Aoki switches over to their generators. In a hospital Sally and Tetsuya Yoshinaga's father is being operated on, but the blackout is causing problems and making Tetsuya worry. Ether 5656 continues to steal the electricity as the police headed by Syouichirou Ozawa arrive on the scene and are shocked by the robot's large size. Ether 5656 easily manages to destroy the police's Government Dog robots. Meanwhile, Maito learns of the attack on the power plant and launches in Might Wing and Gaine also heads out. At the hospital Tetsuya notices the blackout was caused by a robot attacking the power plant and tells Sally. Sally sees this as horrible and heads to the power plant to beg for them to stop. Wolfgang doesn't listen to Sally's demands and she is thrown away, but suddenly Ether 5656 is attacked. Might Wing and a transformed Gaine arrive on the scene. Gaine notices Sally and tells Maito about her. Gaine demands that Wolfgang stop and Wolfgang is shocked and wonders if it's the reputed Might Gaine. Maito arrives to save Sally, and she tells him about her dad's operation and begs for him to help her. Maito sees that Sally is hurt and carries her away. Ether 5656 attacks Gaine but Gaine dodges and kicks Ether 5656. Wolfgang sees Gaine is faster but says he has more power. Sally introduces herself and asks for Maito's name but he says it's not important. Gaine is pinned against a wall by Ether 5656, so Maito summons the train Locomoriser. Might Wing frees Gaine, which then combines with Might Wing and Locomoriser into Might Gaine. Wolfgang is shocked to see this is the real Might Gaine. Might Gaine brings out its giant sword Dou-Rin-Ken. Ether 5656 attacks Might Gaine with missiles but is stopped. Might Gaine then destroys Ether 5656 with Ichimonji-Giri, slicing it too pieces. Wolfgang runs off swearing his revenge on Might Gaine. At the hospital with restored power, Sally's father's operation is a success, which makes her and Tetsuya happy.

Commentary

Well, that's the first episode of Might Gaine, which is a very train-filled show. The world has drastically changed since the oil ran out fifty years ago and we mainly have trains for transportation now. We are also introduced to the main cast of the show, although very briefly with the exception of Maito and Gaine. We are also introduced to the first villain Wolfgang, your typical mad scientist who builds robots then gets defeated and swears revenge. There's also Sally, who has a thing for Maito and does not end up doing the smartest thing in the world: begging a villain to stop it almost gets her killed. And let's not forget the reputed Might Gaine, which many people initially believed was just Gaine.
