Code Geass

Code Geass

Set in an alternate future, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion focuses on a conquered Japan. Directed by Goro Taniguchi (Planetes), the series features character designs by CLAMP and mechanical designs by Akira Yasuda (Turn A Gundam, Overman King Gainer). Code Geass premiered on Japanese TV in October 2006 and ran for 25 episodes. Seven years have passed since the Holy Britannia Empire invaded Japan, and the Japanese (now called Elevens for Japan's new name, Area 11) are oppressed through the use of mecha known as Knightmare Frames. Britannian student Lelouch Lamperouge hates the Empire, and the acquisition of a mysterious power known as Geass gives him his tool for revenge. But Lelouch's path to revenge as the black knight Zero isn't easy, because his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi is now a Britannian soldier. The second season, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, picked up a year after the first season. The end of the series was followed in 2010 by the Japan-only OVA release The Miraculous Birthday. In 2012, Sunrise released the one shot OVA Nunnally in Wonderland, followed in 2013 by the OVA series Akito the Exiled. To mark the series' 10th anniversary, Sunrise released a compilation trilogy in 2017 and a sequel movie in 2019, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection. In late 2020, Sunrise announced a new anime series in the franchise, Code Geass: Z of the Recapture. Most of the Code Geass anime productions have been released in North America by Funimation, with the exception of the Birthday and Nunnally OVAs.
